How to Get Into McGill From Algeria: Bac, English, CAQ
McGill is the Canadian university Algerian applicants most often start with, for good reasons: it names your Baccalauréat de l’enseignement secondaire on its own requirements page, Montreal works in French, and Algeria holds a Quebec tuition-exemption quota that no other school in this trio can offer. What decides the file is your moyenne and your marks in prerequisite subjects across 2e and 3e AS, an English test (the bac does not exempt you), and the January 15, 2027 deadline. For most programs there is nothing else to write.
What McGill looks at from an Algerian applicant
McGill files Algeria under other high school diplomas, where the row reads simply “Algeria: Baccalauréat de l’enseignement secondaire.” The page’s general rules apply: “a recognized, academic, pre-university diploma leading to university studies in your country”; vocational and technical streams “not normally eligible”; and “applicants are reviewed on their high school transcript with particular emphasis on yearly averages and results in prerequisite subjects (prerequisite subjects must have been completed during the last two years of high school).”
McGill is not waiting for your bac result to decide. It reads the yearly averages on your 2e AS bulletin and the 3e AS marks available when it reviews you, then makes the bac a condition of the offer. The filière fixes which prerequisites appear on those bulletins: Mathématiques, Sciences Expérimentales and Maths-Techniques carry maths, physics and chemistry; Gestion et Économie carries maths; Lettres et Philosophie and Langues Étrangères carry neither science.
The grades that get offers
McGill publishes one number for all “other” systems: “While the minimum requirement is the equivalent of a B+ average, most programs will have higher requirements.” There is no Algerian cut-off, and this guide will not invent one. What McGill does publish is the French Baccalauréat page with “the lowest grades used for admission for September 2025,” and since the Algerian bac is also marked out of 20 with a similar structure, those numbers are the most useful reference you have, provided you remember they are McGill’s figures for a different diploma:
| Faculty | French bac, lowest admitted Sept 2025 | Prerequisites McGill names for other systems |
|---|---|---|
| Arts | 16/20 overall | None |
| Science | 16.5/20 overall, 15.5 to 16 in maths and sciences | Maths (pre-calculus at least), chemistry, physics at senior level |
| Engineering | 13.5/20 (Mining) up to 18/20 (Bioengineering); Mechanical 17.5 | Maths, chemistry, physics at senior level |
| Management (BCom) | 17/20 overall, 15.5 in maths | Maths (pre-calculus at least) |
| Arts and Science | 16.5/20 overall, 15.5 in maths and sciences | Maths and two sciences |
McGill adds that “grades that are equal to or better than those listed do not guarantee admission” and that minimums move year to year. On the Algerian mention scale, where 16 and above is Très bien, Science, Management and most of Engineering are Très bien territory, with maths and physics marks that keep up with the moyenne. Arts is the realistic route for a strong Lettres or Langues Étrangères student.
English: not exempt, and the Management bar is higher
The English proficiency page exempts four consecutive years of schooling in a listed English-speaking country and a few credentials (IB English, A Level English, the French BFI option). Algeria is not on the list and the bac carries none of those, so you test. Minimums, checked September 2026:
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each component. One Skill Retake not accepted.
- TOEFL iBT: 90 for Arts, Science, Engineering, Education, Nursing and most faculties; 100 for Management and TESL; components 21 (Speaking 21).
- Duolingo English Test: 125; 130 for BCom and TESL.
- CAEL: 70 overall, 60 per component. PTE Academic: 65 overall, 60 per component. Cambridge: C1 Advanced grade B, C2 Proficiency grade C.
Results go electronically from the testing organisation to McGill. Sit the test by December so the score is in the file when review starts.
French is a separate story. McGill’s French proficiency page says the language of instruction is English and that French is required only for programs with clinical placements: the B.Sc.(N) in Nursing, Dietetics, and Physical and Occupational Therapy, all at B2. Once enrolled, McGill’s Charter of Students’ Rights gives students the right to submit graded written work in English or French except in language courses; confirm the current wording with your faculty before relying on it. Lectures are in English, so the test score is not a formality.
How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry
You apply through McGill’s online application and then track everything in the McGill Applicant Portal. The deadline for applicants “studying or who last studied in an overseas or U.S. high school” is Friday, January 15, 2027; confirm it on the deadlines page before you plan around it.
On documents, McGill’s submit documents page is blunt: “It is in the applicant’s interest to complete their file as quickly as possible. When program space is limited, preference may be given to applicants who have submitted all required supporting documents earlier on,” and incomplete files can be cancelled once a program fills. Upload the 1re and 2e AS bulletins and the 3e AS first-trimestre results the week you apply, with a certified French or English translation of anything issued in Arabic only. Decisions for overseas high schools ran from mid-November to mid-May in the September 2026 cycle, per the decision dates page; the bac relevé and attestation go in when ONEC issues them.
The part you control: for most programs, nothing beyond grades
Arts, Science, Engineering, Management and Arts and Science are decided on the transcript and the English score. No personal statement, no interview, no activities list. Where writing and speaking do appear at McGill:
- Global Engineering: a personal statement, “written in English, no more than two pages, single spaced,” and a video interview for invited candidates.
- B.A. in Population and Global Health: an activities list and three essay questions.
- Music (audition), Social Work (written submission plus two references), Physical and Occupational Therapy (CASPer).
- The Major Entrance Scholarship application, covered below.
That short list is where AcceptMe earns its place in a McGill application: a Global Engineering statement or a scholarship essay pasted into the essay coach comes back with a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, and the interview practice gives you a camera, a prep window and an answer clock before an invited video interview. The bigger reason most Algerian applicants use it is the other two schools on their list, which decide on exactly the material McGill ignores.
Money: tuition, the Algeria exemption, scholarships, proof of funds
McGill’s 2026-27 tuition page and its international undergraduate rate sheet (updated December 2025) list, for students admitted in Fall 2026, annual tuition of $54,000.00 for the B.A., $64,785.90 for the B.Sc., $65,167.50 for the B.Eng. and $71,687.40 for the B.Com., in Canadian dollars, before roughly $3,500 of fees and insurance, guaranteed for the length of the degree. Fall 2027 rates come in late 2026; confirm the credit load the sheet assumes with Student Accounts.
Now the part specific to Algeria. Quebec signs student-mobility agreements that exempt a fixed number of each partner country’s citizens from international fees. The Quebec government’s exemptions page and its table of countries give Algeria 83 exemptions, 31 of them at undergraduate level, among the largest quotas on the list. An exempted bachelor’s student pays “the rate applicable to Canadians who are non-residents of Québec,” which McGill’s 2026-27 undergraduate rates page sets at $432.85 per credit, about $13,000 for a 30-credit year instead of $54,000 to $72,000. The catches: you “must be recommended by the person responsible for managing exemptions” in Algeria, so selection runs from Algiers, not McGill; you must study full time with a CAQ and permit; it lasts at most three years of a bachelor’s; and no more than 20% of all exemptions may go to English-language universities, which is McGill. Ask the Algerian ministry that handles study abroad the autumn before you apply, and file it with McGill’s legal documents office once admitted. The automatic preferred rate for French and Belgian citizens does not extend to Algerians.
McGill’s own money, from the entrance scholarships page: every applicant is automatically considered for a $3,000 one-year scholarship. Major Entrance Scholarships of $3,000 to $12,000 a year, renewable, need a separate application that opens October 1 and, for schools outside Canada, closes January 21 in the cycle shown on the application instructions; the $12,000 tier is for Canadians only. The application is a three-year activities list, an essay on a figure who influenced you, a one-page reference you write about yourself in the third person, two references and a school statement of rank. McGill’s academic criteria for overseas systems ask for an A average of roughly 97% or top 1%; the French bac line is 18/20 with 15 in every subject, the nearer analogue for an Algerian relevé.
Quebec sets its own proof of funds. For the CAQ, the province’s costs of studies page requires, from January 1, 2026, $24,617 a year for one person’s basic needs, plus first-year tuition and a return ticket. IRCC’s financial support page sends Quebec applicants to those provincial amounts.
The study permit: CAQ first, then IRCC
Quebec selects its own students. The Certificat d’acceptation du Québec is applied for through the Arrima portal with your McGill admission letter, passport and proof of funds; the fee is $135 and Quebec says “a decision is rendered within 25 business days following receipt of a complete application, in 80% of cases.” The CAQ also serves as your provincial attestation letter for the federal cap. IRCC’s 2026 allocation notice gives Quebec 93,069 allocation spaces within 309,670 nationally. Apply for the CAQ the week you accept, and for the permit the day the CAQ arrives: letter of acceptance, CAQ, passport, funds and a letter of explanation online, then biometrics ($85) at the VFS Global centre in Algiers listed on IRCC’s visa application centre finder. Algeria was never in the Student Direct Stream, so its closure in November 2024 changed nothing for you. IRCC publishes no approval rate for Algeria; funds and a coherent study plan decide most files.
A worked reading of one transcript
Amine’s 2e AS yearly average is 16.8; his 3e AS first trimestre is 17.2, with mathématiques 18.5, physique 17.0 and sciences 15.0. Against McGill’s French-bac reference, Science (16.5 overall, 15.5 to 16 in maths and sciences) is a clear match: overall well above, every prerequisite above 15.5. Mechanical Engineering (17.5 overall and in maths and science) is a coin flip: the overall is close and maths is strong, but physique at 17.0 sits under the line and chemistry is folded into a 15.0 sciences mark. Bioengineering at 18 is out of reach on this transcript. His plan: Science first choice, Mechanical second, push physique and sciences in the second trimestre because McGill sees those marks before it decides, book the IELTS for November, and register with the exemption office in Algiers in September, since a place in the quota turns a $65,000 year into $13,000.
Mistakes Algerian applicants make
- Applying to a faculty from the wrong filière. Gestion et Économie has no physics; Lettres has no maths. McGill checks prerequisites in the last two years, not the bac total.
- Waiting for the bac to apply. January 15 falls five months before the exam. McGill decides on bulletins; the relevé confirms.
- Assuming French replaces the English test. It does not, and Management needs TOEFL 100 or Duolingo 130.
- Not knowing the exemption exists. Thirty-one undergraduate exemptions, run from Algeria, at Canadian fees. Most applicants find out after paying a year of international tuition.
- Sizing funds to IRCC’s number. Quebec’s $24,617 is the CAQ figure, and the CAQ comes first.
Where to go next
The other two schools read the parts of you McGill skips: the UBC admission guide for Algerian applicants covers the Personal Profile every UBC applicant writes, and the University of Toronto admission guide for Algerian applicants covers the Rotman and Engineering timed videos. For how the same questions look for a French bac, a Moroccan bac or any other credential, the by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants is the index. If you go for the Major Entrance Scholarship, the scholarship essay and interview guide shows how a leadership essay is read. Then put whichever piece you are writing through AcceptMe’s essay coach before you upload it.
