How to Get Into McGill From South Korea: Transcript, CAQ
For a South Korean applicant, McGill is the simplest of the three big Canadian files and the least forgiving: for almost every program McGill decides on your high school transcript alone, with an English test unless you are exempt, by January 15, and there is no essay or interview to recover a weak 등급. The CSAT is not asked for. What follows is what McGill publishes for a Korean high school diploma for Fall 2027 entry, and where an essay or a video still shows up around the edges.
What McGill asks of a Korean high school diploma
McGill’s requirements page for high schools outside Canada and the US has named pages for a handful of systems (A Levels, IB, French Bac, China, Hong Kong, India) and puts everyone else, Korea included, under other high school diplomas. The rule there: “the normal basis for admission is completion of the credentials that lead to university admission in your country of study,” which for you is the 고등학교 졸업장 from a general, autonomous, foreign-language or science high school. McGill adds that studies at vocational or technical high schools (특성화고) are “not normally considered for admission.”
How it is read: “applicants are reviewed on their high school transcript with particular emphasis on yearly averages and results in prerequisite subjects (prerequisite subjects must have been completed during the last two years of high school).” And the floor: “the minimum requirements is the equivalent of a B+ average, though most programs will have higher requirements.” McGill does not publish a Korea-specific cut-off, a target 등급 or a raw-score band, and it does not list the CSAT (수능) anywhere for Korean applicants. Your 학교생활기록부 is the whole academic file.
Reading your 성적증명서 against McGill’s table
McGill wants two things from the record: yearly averages, and the marks in the subjects its faculty treats as prerequisites. The prerequisites, from the other-diplomas page, checked September 2026:
| Faculty | McGill’s prerequisites | Korean courses that satisfy them |
|---|---|---|
| Arts | No specific prerequisites | The yearly average carries it; 국어, 영어 and social studies 등급 are what a reader sees first. |
| Science, Engineering | Math (minimum pre-calculus) and normally two of biology, chemistry, physics | 수학 I and II, plus 미적분 if you can; two of 생명과학 I, 화학 I, 물리학 I taken in years two and three. |
| Management (Desautels) | Math (minimum pre-calculus) | 수학 I and II; 확률과 통계 or 미적분 helps the average. |
| Nursing (B.Sc.N.) | Math and two sciences, plus proof of French proficiency | The French requirement rules out most Korean applicants at entry. |
“Completed during the last two years” matters for the Korean timetable. Many schools place 화학 I and 물리학 I in second year and the II courses in third; that is fine. What fails the check is a science you only took in first year (고1) and never again. Computer Science at McGill is a Science program, so it follows the Science row.
Minjun’s record shows 수학 I and II at 1등급 with raw scores of 94 and 91, 미적분 at 2등급 (88), 화학 I at 1등급 (95), 물리학 I at 2등급 (87), 영어 at 2등급 (89) and 국어 at 3등급 (82). Yearly averages: 89 in year one, 91 in year two, 90 across the first semester of year three. Against McGill’s table: math above pre-calculus, two sciences in the last two years, and every prerequisite in the 1 to 2 등급 band. The 국어 3등급 pulls the average, and McGill reads yearly averages, but it is not a prerequisite for Engineering and it does not sink the file. He is a live Engineering candidate; the B+ floor is far below him. For Management he would look the same, minus the science bonus. He needs an IELTS 6.5, because nothing on his record exempts him.
English: McGill’s exemption does not cover Korean schools
McGill’s English proficiency page exempts you if you “lived and attended school for at least four consecutive years in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language,” or completed IB English A with a 5 or better, A-Level English with a C or better, or GCSE/IGCSE English with a B (or 5) or better. Note the wording: the country, not the school. A Korean international school teaching a US curriculum in Seoul does not exempt you at McGill the way it can at UBC; only the IB, A-Level or GCSE English routes do. A 외고 English track does not either.
Accepted scores, checked September 2026: IELTS Academic 6.5 with each band 6.0 or better; TOEFL iBT on the new six-point scale (tests from January 21, 2026) 4.5 overall with Reading, Listening and Writing 4.5 and Speaking 4.0 for most programs, and 5.0 overall with 4.5 in each part for Education and Management (on the old scale, 90 and 100); Duolingo 125, or 130 for B.Com. and B.Ed. (TESL); CAEL 70 with parts at 60; PTE Academic 65 with parts at 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced grade B or C2 Proficiency grade C. Management’s higher bar is the one Korean commerce applicants trip on: a 4.5 TOEFL that clears Arts does not clear Desautels. McGill wants results sent electronically by the testing body, not a PDF you upload, and reserves the right to ask anyone for proof at any point.
Applying for Fall 2027 entry
You apply through the McGill Applicant Portal (McGill’s step-by-step guide describes the new system; the fee is non-refundable and paid by card). Deadlines on the other-diplomas page for applicants from outside Canada: application by January 15, supporting documents by March 1, Major Entrance Scholarship application and documents by January 21, financial aid within 30 days of acceptance. McGill warns that when a program fills, complete files may be preferred and incomplete ones cancelled after the document deadline, so do not treat March 1 as the day to start. Decisions for high school applicants outside Canada and the US are released from mid-November to mid-May. Confirm each date on the page before you plan around it.
Documents: a copy of your high school transcript “including interim/mid-year/first semester results of the final year.” Korean third-year first-semester marks are final by late summer, so you can upload a complete 1학기 record in the autumn, ahead of systems whose mid-year marks arrive in February. Ask your 교무실 for English-language 성적증명서 and 졸업예정증명서; McGill’s submit documents page lists the program-specific extras and does not ask for an apostille for the initial upload, but confirm the translation rule there if your school only issues Korean.
Where an essay or interview still appears
Be clear about this: McGill does not interview, and Arts, Science, Engineering and Management do not ask for a personal statement. The exceptions, from the submit-documents page: Music needs an audition; Nursing needs French; Social Work needs a written submission and two letters; Education needs language tests; a few specialised programs list a personal statement and a possible video interview. Read your program’s own page if it is one of those.
The one place a mainstream Korean applicant writes for McGill is the Major Entrance Scholarship application, due January 21 for schools outside Canada: two reference letters (one academic, one activity-related), a signed statement from your school giving class size and your rank if available, your activities and volunteering, an essay on a contemporary or historical figure who influenced you or on a memorable event, and a one-page reference letter you write for yourself in the third person. McGill’s scholarship criteria page puts the overseas high school bar at an A average, approximately 97% or equivalent, and says meeting it guarantees nothing. That third-person letter is the strangest piece of writing in Canadian admissions, and it is exactly the kind of thing to run through AcceptMe’s essay coach: the notes pinned to your sentences will tell you where it slides from evidence into praise.
Minjun is the student who rebuilt the school’s robotics team after it lost its supervisor in his second year. Rather than let it close, he approached a physics teacher with a one-page plan, recruited six first-years, and taught the Arduino basics himself from material he had learned online. The team placed in the regional round of a national competition the following spring, the school’s first entry. Teachers describe him as steady rather than loud; he is the one who stays to reset the lab. His 1등급 marks in mathematics and chemistry across two years reflect the same habit.
Money: tuition, awards and the two funds figures
McGill guarantees an international undergraduate’s per-credit tuition for the length of the degree. Its 2026-27 tuition page links the international undergraduate table (students admitted for Fall 2026, updated December 2025): tuition of $54,000.00 for a Bachelor of Arts, $64,785.90 for a Bachelor of Science, $65,167.50 for a Bachelor of Engineering and $71,687.40 for a Bachelor of Commerce, with estimated totals including fees and international health insurance of $57,569.02, $68,322.91, $69,196.93 and $75,321.21 respectively. The Fall 2027 table will be published later; expect it to sit above these. Montreal rent is the offset that makes McGill competitive on total cost.
Awards, from the entrance scholarships page: one-year scholarships of $3,000 need no application and are decided on grades; major scholarships run from $12,000 to $48,000 (the $12,000 tier is Canadians only) and need the January 21 application above. Need-based aid for international students exists but is applied for after admission.
Two proof-of-funds numbers apply to you, and they are different. Quebec sets its own: the costs of studying in Québec page requires a single student to show $24,617 for living expenses from January 1, 2026, excluding tuition and the return flight. IRCC’s financial support page says Quebec applicants must meet the Quebec ministry’s amounts rather than the federal $23,448 used elsewhere. Six months of Korean bank statements are accepted; a Canadian GIC is an alternative.
The CAQ first, then the study permit
Quebec is the one province where the attestation letter is replaced by a provincial certificate. The Québec authorizations page says any program over six months needs both a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec for studies and a federal study permit, that you apply for the CAQ “as soon as you obtain your letter of admission,” and that you apply for the study permit “as soon as you receive your letter confirming the issuance of your CAQ.” IRCC’s attestation letter page confirms that for Quebec you need the CAQ attestation rather than a PAL. McGill’s international student office CAQ FAQ for new students says to apply “right away” on receiving the admission letter and gives a standard processing time of 25 business days from the day Quebec confirms it has your documents.
Korean citizens are eTA nationals, so no visitor visa, but a degree needs a permit regardless, applied for online from Korea before you travel; IRCC issues the eTA with it. The 2026 cap gave Quebec 93,069 application spaces, and an attestation from one cap year is not valid for the next. The Student Direct Stream never included Korea, so its closure in November 2024 changed nothing for you. A McGill offer in March means a CAQ application in March and a permit application in May. Male applicants should check the Military Manpower Administration’s overseas travel permit rule (국외여행허가) for the years the degree covers.
Mistakes Korean applicants make at McGill
- Expecting an essay to rescue a 3등급 in a prerequisite. There is none. The transcript decides.
- Assuming an international-school or 외고 background exempts you from the test. At McGill the exemption is by country, not school. Only IB, A-Level or GCSE English scores substitute.
- Sending a Management application with an Arts-level TOEFL. Desautels needs 5.0 on the new scale and Duolingo 130.
- Uploading a self-made PDF of the IELTS. McGill wants electronic delivery from the testing body.
- Missing January 21. The major scholarship deadline comes six days after the application deadline and needs two references and a school statement you cannot produce overnight.
- Treating the CAQ as paperwork for the summer. It gates the study permit; apply the week the offer arrives.
Where to go next
Almost every Korean student applying to McGill is also applying to UBC and Toronto, and those are where the writing and the camera work live: how to get into UBC from South Korea covers the Personal Profile every applicant writes, and how to get into the University of Toronto from South Korea covers the timed video responses for Rotman Commerce and Engineering; the UBC Personal Profile question examples show the published prompts with worked answers. The scholarship essays and interviews guide is built for exactly the kind of reference-and-essay package McGill’s major scholarship asks for, and the by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants lines up every country in this series. When you have the scholarship essay drafted, or the UBC profile, put it through AcceptMe’s essay coach and fix what it marks before January.
