How to Get Into UBC From the US: Grades, Profile, Aid

If you are finishing high school in the United States and applying to UBC for Fall 2027, the file is simpler than the one you are building for American colleges: your transcript from an accredited high school, an optional SAT or ACT, no English test after four years of US schooling, one January 15 deadline, and a Personal Profile that every applicant writes. The grades decide most of it. The profile decides the rest.

What UBC looks at from a US applicant

UBC’s Academic Calendar has a page for applicants following the American secondary school curriculum. The credential is “graduation from an academic or college preparation program at a US regionally-accredited school.” UBC recommends “at least six senior-level courses,” requires “English to the senior level (not ESL)” with a “minimum final grade of 70% (or equivalent) in either junior or senior year English,” and “three years of mathematics to the junior level.” AP courses taken before junior year still count toward admission.

On testing, the same page is explicit: “The submission of standardized test scores (SAT and ACT) is optional,” and applicants “will not be at a disadvantage if they cannot or choose not to submit a test score.” If your score helps you, send it; if it does not, leave it out.

UBC reads grades, not GPAs. Send the transcript as your school prints it, and let UBC do the conversion. There is no published weighted-versus-unweighted rule; the reviewers see the course level on the transcript, so an A in AP Chemistry is read as an A in a harder course, not as a 5.0. Your first-round file is your Grade 11 year plus whatever Grade 12 grades exist; the UBC early versus regular admission timeline explains which grades are in hand at each read.

The grades and courses that get offers

UBC does not publish a GPA cut-off for US applicants. It does say that the program requirements written for Canadian schools “will be applied to applicants, as appropriate,” and those requirements are on the program requirements page. Translated into US course names:

Degree UBC’s Grade 12 requirement What that means on a US transcript
Applied Science (Engineering) English 12, Pre-Calculus 12, Chemistry 12, Physics 12 Senior English, precalculus or higher (AP Calculus is stronger), chemistry and physics at the senior or AP level
Science (includes Computer Science) English 12, Pre-Calculus 12, one of Chemistry 12, Physics 12 or Anatomy & Physiology 12; Chemistry 11 and Physics 11 Senior English, precalculus, chemistry and physics somewhere in Grades 10 to 12, plus one senior lab science
Commerce (Sauder) English 12, Pre-Calculus 12 Senior English and precalculus; economics or statistics helps but is not required
Arts English 12 (Pre-Calculus 12 for Economics) Senior English; precalculus if you want Economics

“Prerequisite” here means the course must be on the transcript, completed or in progress, by the time UBC assesses you. It does not mean UBC publishes a minimum grade in it beyond the 70% English floor. Competitive averages are not published either, for any faculty. The honest statement is: mostly As in the prerequisite subjects, a full senior schedule, and a strong Personal Profile.

English proficiency: waived after four years of US school

UBC’s English Language Admission Standard is met by students completing a regionally accredited US curriculum for four years, or, with fewer years, by an AP English grade of 4 or higher. If you moved to the US in Grade 10 or later and have no AP English score, you need a test: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 with Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21 and Speaking 21, Duolingo 125, CAEL 70, or PTE Academic 65 with every section at 60 or above. Scores must come from a single sitting, and for Fall 2027 entry the ELAS documentation deadline is February 15, 2027.

How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry

You apply through EducationPlannerBC, not the Common App. The fee for applicants who need a study permit is $173.25 CAD. You choose a first- and second-choice degree, and once you submit you cannot edit anything. UBC’s dates and deadlines page for the 2027 Winter Session lists the application opening in early October 2026, the application deadline of January 15, 2027, and decisions released between November 2026 and June 2027. The December 1 date exists for Canadian citizens and permanent residents seeking domestic scholarships; it does not apply to you. Confirm every date on the page before you plan around it.

Documents follow the submit your documents schedule: proof of ELAS by February 15; transcripts showing courses in progress, plus SAT or ACT scores if you are sending them, by March 15; final transcripts by June 30; and AP results by July 31 through the College Board, institution code 0965. Offers are accepted, with a deposit, by May 1 or June 1, 2027 depending on your program. After you submit, the UBC application status messages guide decodes what the portal shows between January and May.

The part you control: the Personal Profile

Every high school applicant to UBC writes the Personal Profile (the exceptions are the design, dental hygiene and music degrees, which run their own process). It is a set of short written answers of 500 to 2,100 characters each, an activities list of up to five entries, and two references, one of whom must be a school official. UBC reads for four things it names: engagement and accomplishment, leadership, substance, and voice. Commerce applicants answer two extra Sauder questions.

For an American student the trap is the Common App essay. It is 650 words of narrative; UBC wants 50 to 500 words of direct answer to a direct question, per box, with characters counted. The UBC Personal Profile questions with example answers shows the published questions and how a strong answer differs from a polished one, and the Personal Profile character limits and references guide covers the mechanics. Once each answer is drafted, paste it into AcceptMe’s essay coach: it returns a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, tagged works, tighten or fix, which is the fastest way to find the paragraph that is still a list of activities. If you are applying to Sauder, the Sauder BCom Personal Profile and video interview guide covers the program-specific questions.

Worked answer: “Tell us about who you are” (Jordan, Illinois public school, unweighted 3.8, AP Calculus BC)

My friends would say I am the one who reads the manual. When our robotics team’s drive train failed two days before the state qualifier, three people wanted to rebuild it and I wanted to know why it broke. I spent the evening with the motor spec sheet and found we had been running it past its rated current all season. We replaced one part instead of ten and qualified. I am not the loudest person on a team, and I have stopped pretending I want to be. What I bring is the habit of finding out how a thing actually works before deciding what to do about it, which is also why I want to study engineering rather than manage engineers.

Why that works: one trait, one moment someone else would remember, a concrete decision with a consequence, and a voice that sounds seventeen. It is 790 characters, comfortably inside the range. The weak version says “I am a curious, hard-working problem-solver who thrives in team environments” and then lists the robotics club, the qualifier and the award.

Money: tuition, living costs and aid

UBC’s undergraduate tuition page lists 2026/27 international first-year tuition at $51,530.40 for Arts, $53,082.00 for Science (Computer Science sits inside Science), $66,199.66 for Applied Science and $66,678.30 for Commerce, all in Canadian dollars and before student fees, housing and insurance. For students who start in 2026/27, UBC caps increases at 3% a year for four years; check the page for the 2027/28 figures once they are approved, usually in the spring. For comparison, the College Board’s Trends in College Pricing puts average published 2025-26 tuition and fees at $31,880 USD for public out-of-state and $45,000 USD for private nonprofit colleges. At current exchange rates UBC Arts lands near the out-of-state number and Engineering near the private one, with Vancouver rent on top.

Two things soften it. First, UBC is a Title IV school: US Direct Loans (subsidized, unsubsidized and Parent PLUS) work at UBC with FAFSA school code G08369. Pell Grants, FSEOG and work-study do not. Apply at least four weeks before term. Second, the international awards are automatic: the International Major Entrance Scholarship pays $10,000 to $25,000 a year for up to four years and the Outstanding International Student Award pays $10,000 to $25,000 once; both are considered from the admission application alone, with results between mid-February and the end of April. The need-and-merit International Scholars awards (which include the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award) require a school nomination and an application by November 15, 2026, with documents by January 31, 2027, and can cover the full cost of the degree. The UBC entrance scholarships and the Personal Profile guide explains how the profile feeds those decisions.

The study permit: yes, Americans need one

A US passport gets you into Canada as a visitor, not as a student. For a degree program you need a study permit ($150 CAD). Canada caps new study permits: the Ministerial Instructions published in the Canada Gazette set 309,670 applications to be accepted for processing in 2026, and every capped application must include a provincial attestation letter issued by British Columbia through UBC. You request it from UBC after you accept the offer; confirm the 2027 process on UBC’s page when you do. You also show proof of funds: from September 1, 2026, $23,448 CAD for living costs for a single applicant, plus first-year tuition and return transport.

One thing US citizens can do that almost nobody else can: IRCC’s apply page lists “a citizen of the U.S.” and US permanent residents among those who may apply for the permit at a port of entry. You still need the letter of acceptance, the attestation letter and the proof of funds in hand at the border, and IRCC’s own advice is to apply before you travel. Treat the border option as a backup, and apply online the week you accept.

Mistakes US applicants make

  • Sending a weighted GPA and nothing else. UBC wants the transcript with course-by-course grades. A 4.4 on a 5.0 scale means nothing without it.
  • Dropping to three courses senior year. UBC recommends six senior-level courses. A light senior schedule reads as a light file, especially in the first round, which is read on Grade 11 and whatever Grade 12 exists.
  • Taking AP Statistics instead of precalculus for Science or Sauder. The math prerequisite is precalculus; statistics does not replace it.
  • Reusing the Common App essay. The Personal Profile questions are literal and the boxes are small. Answer the question asked.
  • Assuming an American passport skips the study permit. It skips the visa and the eTA. It does not skip the permit.

Where to go next

If you are applying to more than one Canadian school, the McGill admission requirements for US high school applicants are a different system, decided almost entirely on unweighted grades with no profile, and the University of Toronto admission guide for American students covers the OUAC 105 application and the Rotman and Engineering supplementals with timed video. The by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants puts every country side by side. For the activities list itself, the UBC Personal Profile activities section guide shows how to turn five lines into evidence. Then draft every answer, run each through AcceptMe’s essay coach, and fix the sentences it flags before January 15.
