How to Get Into McGill From Pakistan: Grades, IELTS, CAQ
McGill reads a Pakistani applicant almost entirely on the transcript: the Intermediate or Higher Secondary School Certificate in First Division, or three A Levels against the cut-offs it publishes, plus an English test unless your O Level or A Level English clears the exemption. There is no Personal Profile and no interview for most programs. The application deadline for Fall 2027 entry is January 15, 2027, documents follow by March 1, and after the offer comes a step UBC and Toronto do not have: the Quebec CAQ.
What McGill asks for from Pakistan
McGill has no Pakistan page; its requirements are organised by curriculum, and board students fall under Other international high schools, where the accepted credential is listed as “Intermediate/Higher Secondary School Certificate, (First Division).” The page says applicants “are reviewed on their high school transcript with particular emphasis on yearly averages and results in prerequisite subjects,” that prerequisites “must have been completed during the last two years of high school,” and that the document it wants is a copy of the transcript “including interim/mid-year/ first semester results of the final year.” For a board student: Part I plus a college-certified interim for the second year.
Cambridge students use the Advanced Levels page instead: a minimum of three A Levels in three different subjects, or two A Levels and two AS subjects. If you are in your final year, McGill says you are considered on “(I)GCSEs, Form VI grades, AS results (if written) and predicted AL results,” and it requires the final results once they are out. IBCC equivalence is not mentioned on either page; McGill reads the CAIE statement and the board certificate directly.
The grades that get offers
For the HSSC route, McGill publishes one floor: “the minimum requirement is the equivalent of a B+ average, though most programs will have higher requirements.” First Division is the eligibility line, not the competitive one; a competitive Science or Engineering file has the prerequisite subjects, not just the aggregate, in the board’s top bands.
For A Levels, McGill is unusually specific. The page lists the lowest grades used for admission in September 2025 and warns that matching them “does not guarantee admission in 2026.” As of September 2026, for Fall 2027 planning (confirm on the page):
| Faculty | A Level prerequisites | Last cut-off published (Sept 2025 entry) |
|---|---|---|
| Arts | Three A Levels, no specific subjects. | Predicted AAA; final AAB. |
| Science | A Level Math and at least one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics; all four at GCSE level. | Predicted AAA or AAB; final AAB. |
| Engineering | At least two of A Level Math, Chemistry or Physics, with the GCSE versions. | Not quoted here; read the Engineering row on the page. |
| Management (Desautels) | A Level Math. | Predicted A*AA or AAAA; final AAA. |
| Architecture | Three A Levels including Math or Physics. | A*A*A*A* predicted or final. |
The prerequisite logic carries over to the board groups even though the “Other” page does not spell out Pakistan by subject. FSc Pre-Engineering satisfies Science, Engineering and Management. ICS works for Management and most of Science. FSc Pre-Medical has no Mathematics in the last two years, so Management and Engineering are closed unless you add it. FA is an Arts file. Check the faculty paragraph on the page before you choose a program.
English: not waived by an English-medium college
McGill’s English proficiency page exempts applicants who spent at least four consecutive years at school in a country it lists as English-primary. Pakistan is not on that list. Two other exemptions on the same page do apply to Cambridge students: “British Curriculum A-Level English with a final grade of C or better,” and GCSE, IGCSE or GCE O Level English, English Language, English First Language or English as a Second Language “with a final grade of B (or 5) or better.” Most Karachi and Lahore Cambridge students already have that B.
Board students need a test, with results sent electronically by the supporting-document deadline: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component; TOEFL iBT 90 to 100 depending on program with 21 in each section; Duolingo 125 (130 for the B.Com. and B.Ed. TESL); CAEL 70 with 60 per component; PTE Academic 65 with 60 per component; Cambridge C1 Advanced at grade B or C2 Proficiency at grade C. McGill does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores or the IELTS One Skill Retake.
How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry
The McGill application opens October 1 on the undergraduate admissions site and costs C$140.16, non-refundable. The deadlines on the Other international high schools page: application January 15; supporting documents March 1; Major Entrance Scholarship application and documents January 21; McGill Financial Aid application within 30 days of acceptance; Music and Religious Studies application and documents January 15. When space is limited, earlier documents get preference and incomplete files may be cancelled. For the 2026 cycle the decision dates page put international high school decisions between mid-November and mid-May; expect the same shape for 2027 and confirm on the page.
Practical order for a board student: apply in October, upload the Part I marksheet and a college-certified interim transcript the same week, sit IELTS by December, and send the score the day it arrives. Waiting until January improves nothing.
The file is the transcript, and where it is not
For Arts, Science, Engineering and Management, McGill does not ask for an essay, a profile, an interview or a reference. The supporting documents page lists the exceptions: Music (audition), Population and Global Health (activities list and three essays), Global Engineering (two-page personal statement and a possible video interview), Social Work (written submission and two letters), Education, Nursing and Dietetics (French for some streams), and Physical and Occupational Therapy (CASPer). Desautels is not on that list. If a consultant is charging for a McGill “statement of purpose,” ask which program requires it.
Writing does appear in two places. The first is money: the Major Entrance Scholarship application, due January 21 for applicants outside Canada, asks for a general essay on a contemporary or historical figure or a memorable experience, a three-year activities list, a one-page reference you write about yourself in the third person, two formal references, and a class ranking. The second is the rest of your list: the same student is almost certainly writing UBC’s Personal Profile and recording a Rotman or Engineering video for Toronto. Run the scholarship essay and those answers through AcceptMe’s essay coach, which returns a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, and use its timed interview runs for the videos. The essay is where strong marks and a thin activities list get exposed; the scholarship essays and interviews guide shows what a committee is reading for.
What it costs and what McGill gives back
McGill guarantees the per-credit tuition rate for the cohort year you enter. Its undergraduate fee calculator, set to 2026-27, international, admitted and enrolled as of Fall 2026, shows tuition for a 30-credit year of C$54,000.00 for the B.A. (C$57,646.94 with fees and international health insurance), C$64,785.90 for the B.Sc. (C$68,378.74 total), C$65,167.50 for the B.Eng. (C$69,267.42 total) and C$71,687.40 for the B.Com. (C$75,395.74 total). The Fall 2027 cohort rate is set in spring 2027. For the CAQ, Quebec’s financial capacity page requires, as of January 1, 2026, C$24,617 a year for the basic needs of one person, plus first-year tuition and a return ticket.
On the entrance scholarships page, every applicant is automatically considered for a one-year entrance scholarship of C$3,000 on grades alone. Major Entrance Scholarships of C$3,000, C$5,000 and C$10,000 are renewable and open to international applicants; the C$12,000 tier is for Canadian citizens and permanent residents only. Need-based aid is a separate application within 30 days of your offer. Against a C$70,000 year none of this changes the arithmetic; decide on affordability before January, not after the offer.
The CAQ, then the study permit
Quebec adds a provincial step. McGill’s CAQ guide says the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec is mandatory for every international student, that undergraduates must pay the confirmation deposit to unlock the official acceptance letter the CAQ needs, and that you “must obtain your CAQ before you apply for your study permit.” Quebec’s temporary selection for studies page puts the fee at C$135 as of January 1, 2026, paid within an hour of the Arrima submission, documents within 15 days, decisions within 25 business days in 80 percent of cases. The CAQ letter is also your Provincial Attestation Letter for the federal application, so there is no separate PAL from McGill. Pakistan is not among the territories whose residents upload proof of funds in Arrima; your financial proof goes with the federal study permit application instead.
Then the study permit, online, with biometrics (C$85, within 30 days) at the VFS Global centres IRCC lists in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. The Student Direct Stream that once fast-tracked Pakistani applicants closed on November 8, 2024, and IRCC reported to a parliamentary committee a 2026 target of 155,000 new study permits and a refusal rate of 59 percent for new permits between January and September 2025. IRCC does not publish a Pakistan-only rate. Deposit, CAQ and permit run in sequence, so start the CAQ the day the deposit clears.
Reading your file against McGill’s table
Hamza has eight O Levels including English Language at B, and is in his second A Level year with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry predicted A*AA. He wants Engineering, with Management as a second choice. Against the Advanced Levels page: three A Levels in three different subjects, yes. Engineering prerequisite, at least two of Math, Chemistry or Physics, yes, all three. Management prerequisite, A Level Math, yes; last published Management cut-off, predicted A*AA or AAAA, so his predicted grades sit exactly on it with no margin. English: his O Level B exempts him, so no IELTS. Documents: O Level statement, AS results if he sat any, the school’s predicted grades on letterhead, all uploaded by March 1, 2027, with final CAIE results in August. What he cannot do is improve any of it after January, which is why the January 21 scholarship essay is the only writing in his McGill file, and why his UBC profile and Toronto video deserve the hours he had set aside for a statement McGill will never read.
Mistakes applicants from Pakistan make
- Pre-Medical students choosing Management or Engineering. Both need Mathematics in the last two years. McGill will not read Biology as a substitute.
- Uploading Part I alone. McGill asks for interim final-year results. Get the college to certify send-up or pre-board marks.
- Waiting on IBCC. Equivalence and attestation are for Pakistani institutions. McGill reads CAIE and board documents directly.
- Assuming English-medium schooling is an exemption. Only the country list, an O Level English B or an A Level English C does that.
- Treating March 1 as the real deadline. Early documents get preference when a program fills.
- Worrying about French. McGill teaches in English and needs no French for Arts, Science, Engineering or Management. Montreal being a French city is a different question.
Where to go next
The two schools most Pakistani applicants pair with McGill each add a component McGill does not: the UBC admission guide for Pakistani applicants covers the mandatory Personal Profile and UBC’s 74 percent reference point for the HSSC, and the University of Toronto admission guide for Pakistani applicants covers OUAC 105 and the timed videos for Rotman and Engineering. The by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants compares how each curriculum is read across all three. For the Rotman video, the Rotman Commerce supplemental application questions guide has the format and practice questions, and the UBC Personal Profile question examples show a worked answer. Then put the scholarship essay and every other answer through AcceptMe’s essay coach before January.
