How to Get Into UBC From Pakistan: HSSC, A Levels, Profile
If you are finishing FSc, ICS or FA in Pakistan, or A-levels at a Cambridge school in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad, UBC reads your file on three things: your board or CAIE results against the requirements it publishes for Pakistan and for British-patterned education, an English test or an A-level English grade (the HSSC never waives it), and the Personal Profile every applicant writes. The deadline for Fall 2027 entry is January 15, 2027, with an earlier November 15, 2026 date if you want international scholarship money.
What UBC asks for from Pakistan
UBC’s international high school requirements page is a country selector. Choose Pakistan and the general requirement reads: “Graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school: HSSC, Higher Secondary School Certificate.” It adds that certificates must be official, that photocopies are acceptable if certified by the school principal, head or counsellor, and that “notarized copies are not acceptable.” Ask your principal to certify the copies instead of a notary.
On the Cambridge route, select “United Kingdom (British-patterned education)” instead. The general requirement is standing in at least six academic subject areas across GCSE, AS and A Level, including English, with at least three academic A Levels or six AS Levels; a subject cannot count at both A Level and GCSE. You also need at least a C in English Literature or English Language at GCSE, AS or A Level.
UBC does not ask for IBCC equivalence or attestation; neither appears on its requirements. Do not hold the application for them.
The grades that get offers
UBC says the grades needed “differ by degree, and vary from year to year.” For Pakistan it adds: “In past years, a 74% average on Pakistan’s grading scale was required.” For British-patterned education it says a B average, “a combination of mainly A and B grades,” was required. Read both as past floors, not targets; UBC publishes no per-degree cut-off for Pakistan.
The degree-specific prerequisites, from the same page, for Fall 2027 entry (confirm before you plan around them):
| Degree | HSSC route (FSc, ICS, FA) | O and A Level route |
|---|---|---|
| Arts | No specific courses beyond general admission. | No specific courses beyond general admission. |
| Science | Senior-level Math (Pre-Calculus); Chemistry and Physics at the junior (Grade 11) level. Physics may be waived with 85% in senior Math and senior Chemistry. | Math at A or AS Level; Chemistry and Physics at GCSE. Physics may be waived with an A in A Level Math and A Level Chemistry. |
| Applied Science (Engineering) | Senior-level Math, Chemistry and Physics. Strong candidates missing one of Chemistry or Physics may be looked at case by case. | A Level Math; A Level Chemistry or Physics; Chemistry and Physics at GCSE. Preference for both sciences at A Level. |
| Commerce (Sauder) | Senior-level Math (Pre-Calculus). | Mathematics at A or AS Level. |
Map your group onto that table honestly. FSc Pre-Engineering covers every row. ICS covers Science, Commerce and Arts but has no Chemistry, so Engineering needs the case-by-case reading. FSc Pre-Medical is the trap: Biology instead of Mathematics means no senior-level Math, and Science, Engineering and Sauder all ask for it. Sit Mathematics as an additional subject before you apply, not after.
UBC decides from November 2026 through June 2027 and wants out-of-country documents by March 15, 2027. Your Part II result will not exist by then, so UBC reads Part I plus whatever your college certifies for the second year on an interim transcript. A-level students are read on O Levels, AS results and predicted grades, with the offer conditional on the final CAIE results.
English: the HSSC does not waive it
Pakistan is not on UBC’s list of countries where English is the principal language, so an English-medium college does not, by itself, meet the English Language Admission Standard. Routes that work:
- A test. IELTS Academic 6.5 with no part below 6.0; TOEFL iBT 90 with Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21, Speaking 21; Duolingo 125 with Reading and Listening 115 and Writing and Speaking 120; CAEL 70; PTE Academic 65 with 60 in each part; Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 180.
- An A or B in A Level English Language or English Literature. Note the gap: a C in English satisfies the British-patterned admission requirement, but the English standard needs an A or B.
- Four or more years at an eligible international secondary school that teaches in English in a non-English-speaking country. UBC names Council of International Schools members and “British A Level/GCSE schools” among others, and “reserves the right to exclude schools.” If that is your Cambridge school, send the transcript early and ask UBC to confirm rather than assuming.
The deadline to show you meet the standard is February 15, 2027, and test scores must date from January 1, 2024 or later. Book the test for the autumn, not February.
How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry
The UBC application runs through EducationPlannerBC and opens in early October 2026, per UBC’s dates and deadlines page. The dates that matter: November 15, 2026 for international scholarships; January 15, 2027 for the application itself; February 15, 2027 for English documents; March 15, 2027 for out-of-country high school documents. Decisions arrive “on a continuous basis” from November 2026 to June 2027, and you accept by May 1 or June 1, 2027 depending on your offer. Confirm every date on the page before you plan around it.
The application cannot be edited once submitted, so the November date is a real decision; the UBC early versus regular admission guide walks through what UBC has in hand in each round, and the UBC application status messages guide decodes the portal afterwards.
The Personal Profile, the part you control
Every high school applicant to Arts, Science, Applied Science, Commerce and most other degrees writes the Personal Profile: answers of 500 to 2,100 characters on who you are, what matters to you, your activities and one or two of them in depth, your academic history, and two references, one a school official and neither “a friend, family member, or paid agent.” UBC reads for engagement, leadership, substance and voice. Sauder adds questions and a video, covered in the Sauder BCom Personal Profile and video interview guide.
The reference rule matters in Pakistan, where many families use a consultant: the consultant cannot be a referee, and UBC checks for copied and generated text. Write it yourself, then paste each answer with its question into AcceptMe’s essay coach for a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, each tagged works, tighten or fix. It never writes for you. The published questions and a worked answer are in the UBC Personal Profile question examples, and the activities grid in the activities section guide.
What it costs and what UBC gives back
UBC’s undergraduate tuition page lists 2026/27 international tuition for students starting in 2026: Arts C$51,530.40 for a 30-credit year, Science C$53,082.00, Applied Science C$66,199.66 for a 37-credit first year, Commerce C$66,678.30. Fees and rent are on top. For the study permit, IRCC’s proof of financial support page requires, for applications from September 1, 2026, C$23,448 a year for living expenses on top of first-year tuition and travel, plus C$6,318 for each accompanying family member.
The international scholarships page lists two awards that need nothing beyond applying by the deadline: the International Major Entrance Scholarship, C$10,000 to C$25,000 a year for 2026/27, and the Outstanding International Student Award. The International Scholars Program (the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, the Donald A. Wehrung Award and others) is need-based, needs proof that a UBC degree would be impossible without help, and needs your school to nominate you (up to two students per school for UBC Vancouver), a UBC application by November 15, 2026 and documents by January 31, 2027. Talk to your principal in September, not January.
The study permit from Pakistan
Once you accept, UBC issues your British Columbia Provincial Attestation Letter; IRCC’s PAL page says you get it from your school and cannot use a letter from a previous cap year. IRCC told a parliamentary committee in December 2025 that the 2026 target for new study permits is 155,000, and that the refusal rate for new permits rose to 59% in January to September 2025 from 49% a year earlier. It publishes no Pakistan-specific rate.
Pakistan was one of the countries covered by the Student Direct Stream; IRCC’s notice confirms SDS ended on November 8, 2024; everyone now applies through the regular stream, which still accepts a Guaranteed Investment Certificate. You apply online, pay the C$85 biometrics fee with the application, and give fingerprints within 30 days at a visa application centre; IRCC’s VAC list shows VFS Global centres in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. Apply the week you accept; the PAL, the funds and the biometrics slot all take longer than families expect.
A worked Personal Profile answer
Ayesha, FSc Pre-Medical at a government college in Lahore, 92 percent in Part I, applying to UBC Science with Mathematics added. Question 4, one activity in depth, about 1,700 characters.
The activity I want to explain is the Sunday study circle I run in our street. It started because my cousin failed Part I Chemistry and nobody in the family could tell her why, since she had “done the notes.” One past paper in front of me showed the problem: she was memorising answers to questions that were never asked in that form.
I invited four girls from nearby houses to my drawing room the next Sunday and we did only past papers, timed, then marked each other. By November there were nineteen of us and I had to split the group and ask two second-year students to lead the Physics table. The hard part was not the teaching. It was telling two girls in December that they could not keep coming if they kept arriving without having attempted the paper, because the others were waiting on them. One left. One came back the next week with it done.
All nine of the first-years who stayed passed Part I, and my cousin got 78 in Chemistry. What I learned about myself is less comfortable: I am good at building a system and bad at being the person who enforces it.
For a reader who knows nothing about Pakistani board exams: the situation is one line, the leadership is a decision with a cost, there is a number, and the reflection admits something. No title.
Mistakes applicants from Pakistan make
- Waiting for IBCC, or sending notarized copies. UBC asks for neither and rejects the second. Send board or CAIE documents certified by the principal.
- Assuming an English-medium college meets the English standard. Pakistan is not on UBC’s country list. Book IELTS or TOEFL for the autumn, or make sure your A Level English is an A or B.
- Pre-Medical students applying to Science or Sauder without Mathematics. Senior-level Math is a stated prerequisite for both.
- Treating 74% as the target. It is a past floor; competitive Engineering and Sauder files sit far above it.
- A profile written by the family or the consultant. UBC scores voice, checks for generated text and phones referees.
Where to go next
The same results go to the two schools most Pakistani applicants pair with UBC: the McGill admission guide for Pakistani applicants explains why the McGill file is the transcript alone and how the Quebec CAQ adds a step, and the University of Toronto admission guide for Pakistani applicants covers OUAC 105 and the Rotman and Engineering videos. The by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants compares every curriculum. The character limits and references guide explains the cut-offs that end answers mid-sentence. Then draft the profile in your own words and let AcceptMe’s essay coach mark up the sentences that read like a list before UBC does.
