How to Get Into UBC From Ghana: WASSCE, English, Profile

Applying to UBC from Ghana comes down to four things: your WASSCE grades in the subjects UBC names for your degree, proof that you meet its English standard, a January 15, 2027 application, and the Personal Profile, which every direct-entry applicant writes and which is the only part of the file you can still change after your results are in. This is what UBC publishes for Ghanaian applicants, what it leaves unpublished, and how to plan the year around WAEC’s timetable.

What UBC looks at from a Ghanaian applicant

UBC’s international high schools requirements page (select Ghana) names the credential in one line: graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school, the West African Senior School Certificate. That is the WASSCE, written through WAEC at the end of SHS 3. UBC does not ask for a separate entrance exam, an SAT, or the results of any Ghanaian university admission process.

On grades, the same page is unusually direct for UBC: “The grades you’ll need to be considered for an offer of admission from UBC differ by degree, and vary from year to year. In past years, a combination of mainly B2 and B3 grades was required.” Read that as the floor, not the target. Engineering, Science and Sauder sit above it, and the profile decides between files that look alike on paper.

The WASSCE subjects UBC names for each degree

UBC’s degree-specific requirements for Ghana are written in WASSCE terms (“SSC” on the page means the senior secondary certificate subject). The core four (English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies) and your three or four electives are all read; the prerequisites below are the electives UBC insists on.

UBC degree WASSCE subjects UBC requires Note
Arts No specific courses beyond general admission Your strongest overall profile of B2 or better across the board
Science Mathematics (minimum B2), Physics and Chemistry UBC says Physics may be waived with A1 in both Mathematics and Chemistry
Applied Science (Engineering) Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics The General Science elective set is the natural fit
Commerce (Sauder) Mathematics Sauder also weighs Economics, Geography and similar social-studies electives, and adds its own profile questions

Two things the table does not say. First, “Mathematics” on a WASSCE transcript is two subjects, Core and Elective; if you want Science or Engineering, present Elective Mathematics, because Core alone stops well short of what a Canadian Grade 12 pre-calculus course covers, and confirm with UBC admissions that your combination satisfies the requirement. Second, UBC publishes no WASSCE-to-percent conversion, so a “competitive average” for Engineering or Sauder is not printed anywhere; the B2/B3 line above is the only official signal.

If you are at an international school in Accra doing Cambridge A Levels instead, UBC reads you under British-patterned education: standing in at least six academic subjects across GCSE, AS and A Level, including English, with at least three A Levels or six AS Levels, and Engineering wants A Level Mathematics plus Chemistry or Physics. IB Diploma candidates use UBC’s IB requirements page.

English: UBC does not publish a Ghana exemption

UBC’s English Language Admission Standard lists nine routes. The one Ghanaian applicants reach for is “four or more consecutive years of full-time education in English in a country other than Canada where English is the principal language.” Unlike McGill and U of T, UBC does not print a list of which countries count, and a WASSCE English Language grade is not itself named as a route. Ask UBC in writing whether your SHS counts, and if you do not have a clear answer by December, book a test. The ELAS deadline is February 15, 2027, and the accepted minimums are IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 (reading 22, listening 22, writing 21, speaking 21), Duolingo 125 (reading and listening 115, writing and speaking 120), CAEL 70, PTE Academic 65 with 60 in each part, or Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 180.

How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry

You apply through the UBC application on EducationPlannerBC. The dates and deadlines page gives these for the 2027 Winter Session; confirm each on the page before you plan around it.

Date What happens
Early October 2026Application opens
November 15, 2026International Scholars (Karen McKellin) nomination and application close
December 1, 2026Scholarship deadline for Canadian citizens and permanent residents only; it does not apply to you
January 15, 2027Final application deadline, Personal Profile included
February 15, 2027English (ELAS) documents due
March 15, 2027Transcripts due: in-progress if you are still in SHS, final if you have graduated
May 1 or June 1, 2027Acceptance deposit, date set in your offer
June 30, 2027Final transcripts if you were still in school when you applied

Decisions go out from November 2026 through June 2027. UBC’s submit-documents page has no Ghana-specific instructions; your next-steps email does.

WASSCE timing and WAEC verification

This is the part of a Ghanaian application that catches people. The 2026 WASSCE for school candidates began on May 13, 2026 and WAEC released provisional results in the first week of September 2026. If you wrote in 2026, you apply in January 2027 with complete results, which is the clean case. If you finish SHS 3 in 2027, your results will not exist until around the time UBC’s classes begin, and UBC does not publish how it finalises a Ghanaian offer in that situation. Apply anyway on your SHS terminal reports and mock results, and ask UBC admissions before January how they will treat results that arrive in September; do not assume.

On verification: WAEC Ghana lets institutions confirm results directly through its corporate verification portals, and you check your own at ghana.waecdirect.org with a result-checker serial and e-PIN. A checker card is tied to one result and works up to three times, so keep the card and do not lend it out; universities that ask for your serial and PIN are using it to verify you. If a certificate is lost, WAEC issues an attestation of results (GH¢400, collected in person). Do not send a photocopy of a printout as your only evidence.

The Personal Profile: the part you control

Every high school applicant to Arts, Science, Engineering, Commerce and most other degrees completes the Personal Profile: who you are and how your community would describe you, what is important to you and why, up to five activities, one or two of them explained in depth, an academic-history note, and two referees, one of whom must be a school official and neither of whom can be family or a paid agent. Each answer is 500 to 2,100 characters. UBC reads for engagement and accomplishment, leadership, substance and voice.

Ghanaian applicants tend to underuse this: a student who ran the debating club and kept the family kiosk on Saturdays has two strong answers and usually writes one bland one. The UBC Personal Profile questions with worked examples show what a scored answer looks like; the activities section guide covers how to describe responsibilities that have no title. When each draft is done, paste it into AcceptMe’s essay coach: it returns a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, tagged works, tighten or fix, which is the closest thing to a UBC reader you can get before January 15. Sauder applicants also record a video interview as part of the profile; the Sauder BCom video interview guide walks through it.

Money: tuition, awards, and the funds IRCC wants to see

UBC’s 2026/27 international tuition for a full first-year load is C$51,530 in Arts, C$53,082 in Science, C$66,200 in Engineering (37 credits) and C$66,678 in Commerce, before student fees, housing and insurance. UBC caps increases at 3% a year for students who start in 2026/27; the 2027/28 rates are set in spring 2027, so budget a few percent above these.

The international awards page lists two automatic merit awards, the International Major Entrance Scholarship and the Outstanding International Student Award, each C$10,000 to C$25,000 a year, considered from your application with no extra form. The need-and-merit route is the International Scholars program, which includes the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award: your school nominates you (up to two students for Vancouver), you need a nominator and a separate teacher referee, all As or the equivalent, and proof that a UBC degree would be impossible without significant help. For September 2027 the application closes November 15, 2026, documents are due January 31, and there is a video interview stage between January and March. For a WASSCE student this is the one UBC award that can change whether you go at all, and it has the earliest deadline on this page.

Separately from UBC, IRCC’s proof-of-funds rule for applications made on or after September 1, 2026 is C$23,448 for one year of living costs on top of first-year tuition and travel, shown through six months of bank statements, a scholarship letter, a Canadian GIC or a sponsor’s letter with their employment details.

The study permit from Ghana

Once you accept, UBC issues the British Columbia provincial attestation letter (PAL) that IRCC requires with almost every new study permit application; you cannot apply without it, and a PAL is tied to a cap year. Canada’s 2026 cap is 155,000 new arrivals nationally with 32,596 attestation spaces for BC; the 2027 figure will be set in the fall of 2026. Biometrics (C$85) are given at the VFS Global visa application centre in Accra, the only one in Ghana. Apply the week your PAL arrives.

Be realistic about odds. IRCC figures reported by The PIE News put Ghana’s study permit approval rate at 25% in 2024, and IRCC’s own note to a Senate committee gives 23% for all of Africa in the first nine months of 2024, blaming poor-quality and fraudulent submissions from “unscrupulous consultants” and unproven funds. A UBC offer with an International Scholars award or a fully documented sponsor is a different application from one built on an agent’s template. Write your own study plan, show where every cedi comes from, and file it yourself.

A worked Personal Profile answer

Ama, General Science track at an SHS in Cape Coast, WASSCE 2026 (A1 English, A1 Elective Mathematics, A1 Chemistry, B2 Physics), applying to Science. “Tell us more about one or two activities that are most important to you.”

For two years I kept the accounts for my mother’s provisions shop in Kasoa, which meant I was the one who noticed we were losing money on Milo. The wholesaler had raised prices twice and nobody had changed the shelf price. I built a spreadsheet on my cousin’s laptop, entered every purchase from the receipt book, and found four products we sold at a loss. My mother did not believe a sixteen-year-old over her own instincts, so I printed the numbers and stood next to the shelf while she compared them.

We raised three prices and dropped one product. What I learned is less about margins than about being believed: a correct answer nobody acts on is worth nothing, and the printing and standing there was the actual work. I want to study Science because I like the part where the numbers argue with what everyone assumed.

That is 1,050 characters, names a real responsibility with no title, shows leadership as a decision that affected people, and sounds like a seventeen-year-old. It would score on all four of UBC’s criteria.

Mistakes Ghanaian applicants make

  • Presenting Core Mathematics alone for Science or Engineering. UBC names Mathematics with a B2 minimum for Science; make sure Elective Mathematics is on the transcript you submit.
  • Assuming the WASSCE English grade waives the English test. UBC’s page does not say so. Get a written answer or book IELTS before February 15.
  • Missing November 15 for the International Scholars award because the school only found out about nominations in January.
  • A Personal Profile written by an agent. UBC lists voice as a criterion and bars paid agents from being referees; a polished adult voice reads as exactly that.
  • Waiting for WASSCE results before applying. If you sit in 2027, the results come after the deadline; apply on what you have and ask UBC how they finalise.
  • A study permit file built on a consultant’s funds letter. IRCC says this is why African approval rates collapsed; show your own money trail.

Where to go next

The same WASSCE transcript reads differently in Montreal and Toronto: the McGill admission guide for Ghanaian applicants covers a school that decides almost entirely on grades and waives the English test for four years of Ghanaian schooling, and the University of Toronto admission guide for Ghanaian applicants covers a B2 floor in every Engineering prerequisite and timed video supplementals for Rotman and Engineering. If you are weighing countries as well as schools, the by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants lines up the credentials, deadlines and permit context side by side. The profile itself is worth a separate hour with the UBC Personal Profile review checklist before you submit. Then let AcceptMe’s essay coach read each answer and mark the sentences a UBC reader would stall on.
