How to Get Into UBC From Nigeria: WASSCE, English, Profile
If you are applying to UBC from Nigeria, three things decide your file: your WASSCE (or NECO SSCE) grades in the subjects your degree requires, whether your years of English-medium schooling clear UBC’s English standard without a test, and the Personal Profile that every applicant writes. This guide walks through what UBC actually says about the West African Senior School Certificate, the January 15, 2027 deadline, the money, and the study permit, with a worked profile answer from a Lagos applicant.
What UBC looks at from a Nigerian applicant
UBC’s international high school requirements page is a country picker. Choose Nigeria and the Vancouver campus and the general requirement reads: “Graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school: West African Senior School Certificate.” That is the WASSCE. UBC does not name NECO separately; the NECO SSCE is the same Senior School Certificate from a different council, but confirm with UBC admissions in writing before you rely on a NECO-only file. JAMB and the UTME do not appear anywhere in UBC’s requirements. Do not send them.
On grades, UBC’s wording for Nigeria (checked September 2026) is: “The grades you’ll need to be considered for an offer of admission from UBC differ by degree, and vary from year to year. In past years, a combination of mainly B2 and B3 grades was required.” That is not a cut-off; it is the floor of what has been competitive. A1 and B2 grades in the relevant subjects are where Engineering, Science and Commerce offers sit; C4 and C5 grades in prerequisites put those degrees at risk.
The subjects each degree requires
“SSC” is UBC’s shorthand for a Senior School Certificate subject. These are minimums to be considered, not the grades that get offers.
| Degree (Vancouver) | Required WASSCE subjects, as UBC lists them |
|---|---|
| Science | Math (SSC), minimum grade of B2; Physics and Chemistry (SSC). Physics may be waived with A1 in SSC Math and SSC Chemistry. |
| Applied Science (Engineering) | Math (SSC), Chemistry (SSC), Physics (SSC). |
| Commerce (Sauder) | Math (SSC). Sauder adds its own Personal Profile questions. |
| Arts | No specific courses beyond general admission. |
UBC’s “Math” is WASSCE General Mathematics; Further Mathematics helps a Science or Engineering file but is not required. The Physics waiver for Science needs A1 in both Math and Chemistry, not B2. Computer Science is a specialization inside the Bachelor of Science, so the Science row governs it. If you also hold Cambridge A Levels or IGCSEs, UBC assesses you on the British-patterned curriculum instead; pick one curriculum as your basis and say so, rather than sending both and hoping UBC picks the better one.
English: most Nigerian applicants do not need a test
UBC’s English Language Admission Standard has nine routes. The one that matters here: “Complete four or more consecutive years of full-time education in English in a country other than Canada where English is the principal language.” UBC publishes the list of those countries, and Nigeria is on it (so is Ghana). Four consecutive years of full-time English-medium schooling in Nigeria immediately before UBC meets the standard without IELTS. A C6 or B3 in WASSCE English Language is not itself a route; the exemption is about years of schooling, not the exam grade.
If you do not have the four consecutive years, the accepted tests and minimums on that page are IELTS Academic 6.5 with no part below 6.0; TOEFL iBT 90 overall with Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21, Speaking 21; Duolingo 125 overall (Reading 115, Listening 115, Writing 120, Speaking 120); CAEL 70; PTE Academic 65 with 60 in each part; Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 180. The dates page lists January 31, 2027 for meeting the English requirement and February 15, 2027 for submitting ELAS documents for the 2027 Winter Session; confirm which applies to you before you book a test.
How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry
- Early October 2026: UBC’s online application opens (it runs on the EducationPlannerBC platform that all BC universities share).
- November 15, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Pacific: deadline for international students to apply and submit the International Scholars Program application (see the money section).
- January 15, 2027, 11:59 p.m. Pacific: final application deadline, Personal Profile included.
- March 15, 2027: interim records if you are still in SS3; final transcripts if you have already graduated. For “all other international curricula” the final-transcript deadline for students still in school is June 30, 2027 (Submit your documents).
- May 1 or June 1, 2027: accept the offer and pay the deposit, on whichever date your offer names.
All of those come from UBC’s dates and deadlines page for the 2027 Winter Session; confirm each before you plan around it. The May/June WASSCE releases in August, after every UBC document deadline, so your file will be predicted grades and interim results from your school, with the offer conditional on the real WASSCE. UBC wants official examination results from the issuing body or a third-party provider; for WASSCE that means the WAEC result verification service, where a PIN lets an institution confirm your result against the council’s record. Keep the examination number and PIN together.
The Personal Profile: the part you control
Every high school applicant to Arts, Science, Engineering, Commerce and most other UBC degrees writes the Personal Profile. UBC’s Personal Profile page publishes the questions: who you are and how family, friends or community would describe you; what is important to you and why; an activities list; one or two activities that matter most; academic history and plans; and two referees, one a school official. Each answer is 500 to 2,100 characters. UBC says it reads for engagement and accomplishment, leadership, substance and voice.
Nigerian profiles fail on the same two points: an activities section that lists prefect, JETS club, church choir and debate with nothing that shows what you did in any of them, and a “who are you” answer written like a formal character reference. Fix both with one concrete moment per answer, in your own register. The UBC Personal Profile question examples show what a reader wants for each prompt, and the activities section guide turns a list of titles into evidence. Then paste each answer into AcceptMe’s essay coach: it returns a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your own sentences, tagged works, tighten or fix, which is the fastest way to find the sentence that reads like a testimonial rather than a person.
In SS2 our school’s generator failed during the JETS competition build week and the physics lab had no power for eleven days. I was the one who suggested we move the whole project, a water-level sensor for the hostel tanks, to a classmate’s house in Surulere that had solar. I organised the shuttle of parts, kept the build log in a shared document so the four of us could work in shifts, and rewrote our circuit to run on 5V because that was what we had. We placed second at the Lagos state round. The result I care about more is that the sensor now sits on the tank at school, and when it stopped reporting in February I went back and found the corroded contact myself. I want to study science because I like the moment when a thing that did not work starts to.
One activity, a specific problem, a decision she made, a number, and a closing sentence that reaches the degree without a speech: that is substance and voice in UBC’s terms. If you are applying to Sauder, the Sauder Personal Profile and video interview guide covers the extra Commerce questions.
Money: tuition, scholarships and proof of funds
UBC’s undergraduate tuition page gives 2026/27 international tuition for a full 30-credit year on the Vancouver campus as C$51,530 for the Bachelor of Arts, C$53,082 for the Bachelor of Science, C$66,200 for Applied Science (Engineering, 37 credits) and C$66,678 for Commerce. Students starting in 2026/27 are promised increases of no more than 3% a year for the following four years; expect the 2027/28 figures to be a few percent higher and published in spring 2027. Housing, food and insurance come on top; UBC has a cost estimator on its cost page.
Scholarships an applicant from Nigeria can actually get, from UBC’s international scholarships page:
- International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES): C$10,000 to C$25,000 a year for 2026/27, renewable up to three more years, no separate application. Every international applicant who applies by the deadline is considered on academics plus extracurricular and community involvement, which is the Personal Profile again.
- Outstanding International Student Award: C$10,000 to C$25,000 one time (2025/26 figure), also automatic.
- International Scholars Program (Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, International Impact Award, Vantage One Excellence Award): need-and-merit awards for students who cannot afford UBC. Your school nominates you (up to two students for Vancouver), you apply by November 15, 2026, documents by January 31, 2027, and there is a video interview stage from January to March (program page). UBC asks for “all As or equivalent” and documented financial need. For a strong Nigerian student from a family that cannot pay C$70,000 a year, this is the route, and it requires the November application.
Separately from UBC, IRCC’s proof of financial support page requires a single study permit applicant outside Quebec to show C$23,448 for living expenses for applications made on or after September 1, 2026, plus first-year tuition and return transport. Sending the deposit and tuition out of Nigeria goes through your bank on Form A under the Central Bank’s tuition remittance rules (from June 2026, up to US$25,000 a semester paid directly to the institution against the admission letter); start it the week the offer arrives, because it is slower than the deposit deadline assumes.
The study permit, honestly
Once you accept, UBC requests a British Columbia Provincial Attestation Letter for you; IRCC will not process a study permit without it, and it must be used in the calendar year it is issued (PAL page). The 2026 cap notice gives BC 32,596 attestation spaces for the year; the 2027 numbers will be published in late 2026.
The Nigeria-specific reality: the Nigeria Student Express and the Student Direct Stream both closed at 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024 (IRCC notice), so there is no fast lane; everyone files the regular application. IRCC’s own 2023 briefing put approval rates for applicants residing in Africa at 39% (question period note), and analyses of IRCC data for early 2026 put approvals for Nigerian applicants nearer one in four, with insufficient funds and doubts about leaving Canada after study as the usual reasons. So: apply the week you accept, show first-year tuition plus C$23,448 in verifiable funds (six months of statements, a paid tuition receipt, a GIC), write a short letter of explanation naming the program and why UBC, and include the custodianship declaration if you will be under 17. A scholarship letter from UBC is the strongest single document a Nigerian file can carry.
Mistakes applicants from Nigeria make
- Sending JAMB scores or a UTME slip. UBC never asks for them and they clutter the file.
- Assuming a C6 in English Language proves English. UBC’s exemption is four consecutive years of English-medium schooling in Nigeria, which most applicants have; the exam grade is not the route.
- Missing November 15. The International Scholars Program is the only need-based money for internationals, and it closes two months before the general deadline.
- A profile written by a parent or an agent. UBC names “voice” as a criterion because it sees this constantly.
- Treating the study permit as a formality. With the express streams gone and approvals low, the funds file needs to be ready before the offer, not after.
Where to go next
The same WASSCE file goes to different readers in Montreal and Toronto: the guide to McGill admission from Nigeria explains why that file is the whole application there, and the guide to University of Toronto admission from Nigeria covers the B2 floor and the Rotman and Engineering video profiles. For the other countries and the hub table, see the by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants. If the deadline question is whether to file in November for scholarships or in January, the UBC early vs regular admission guide lays out what UBC has in hand in each round. Then let AcceptMe’s essay coach mark up every profile answer before it goes in.
