How to Get Into UBC From India: Marks, English, Profile

If you are finishing Class XII in India and want UBC, three things decide the file: your CBSE, ISC or state-board marks read as a percentage, an English score or a qualifying Class XII English mark, and the Personal Profile every applicant writes. UBC has told Indian applicants what it needed in past cycles, publishes the deadline, and scores the profile on four named criteria. Here is the whole path for Fall 2027 entry.

What UBC looks at from an Indian applicant

Pick India on UBC’s international high school requirements page and the general requirement reads: “Graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school: Higher Secondary School Certificate awarded on completion of Standard XII. Certificates must be official. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable.” In practice that covers the CBSE All India Senior School Certificate, the CISCE Indian School Certificate and the state boards (Maharashtra HSC, Karnataka PUC II, Tamil Nadu HSC and the rest). UBC does not rank the boards against each other on that page; it reads the percentage on the certificate.

India sends more students to Canadian universities than any other country, 61,770 in 2023/24 (Statistics Canada, 2023/24), so UBC’s readers know every board. There is no entrance exam to sit; the board result is the exam.

The grades that get offers

The same UBC page says: “The grades you’ll need to be considered for an offer of admission from UBC differ by degree, and vary from year to year. In past years, an 85% average on India’s grading scale was required.” Treat 85 as the floor below which a file is not competitive, not as the number that gets you in. UBC does not publish per-degree cut-offs for India, and the degrees that fill fastest (Commerce, Engineering, Computer Science inside Science) take fewer applicants at any given percentage than Arts does.

UBC reads whatever grades exist when it reads your file: the Class X board result, full Class XI, and whatever Class XII term or pre-board marks your school can certify by March 15, 2027, the date UBC lists for out-of-country grades. The May board certificate confirms a conditional offer. The UBC early versus regular admission guide explains which grades are in hand at each round; for you, Class XI is the academic file until the board result exists.

The subject prerequisites UBC lists for Indian applicants, all at Standard XII level:

UBC degree Required Class XII subjects
Arts None beyond general admission
Science (includes Computer Science) Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics. UBC notes Physics may be waived with grades of A in senior Mathematics and Chemistry.
Applied Science (Engineering) Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics
Commerce (Sauder) Mathematics or Applied Mathematics
Kinesiology One of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Biology

Notice that UBC accepts CBSE’s Applied Mathematics as the maths prerequisite; U of T does not for calculus-based programs, which matters if you are applying to both. And a Science applicant who dropped Physics after Class XI needs the A-grade waiver. The UBC core average versus overall average guide shows how UBC weights the subjects it requires against the rest.

English: the 75 percent rule

UBC’s English Language Admission Standard has a route written for you. An applicant meets the standard with a grade of 75 percent or higher in the senior English subject, provided the school is affiliated to CBSE or CISCE and the curriculum leads to the AISSC or the ISC. Read that carefully: it is Class XII English Core or ISC English, at 75 or above, from an affiliated school. A state-board school does not qualify under this clause, and neither does a CBSE English mark of 72. If you do not meet it, you need a test by February 15, 2027, the date UBC lists for ELAS documents.

The test minimums UBC publishes:

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, no component below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 90 overall, with reading 22, listening 22, writing 21, speaking 21
  • Duolingo English Test: 125 overall, with reading and listening 115, writing and speaking 120
  • PTE Academic: 65 overall, no component below 60
  • CAEL: 70 overall
  • Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: 180

The mark UBC sees by February 15 is whatever your school certifies, usually a pre-board or Class XI mark. If it is close to 75, book an IELTS date in the autumn as insurance, and confirm the clause on the linked page before you decide.

How and when to apply for Fall 2027

UBC’s dates and deadlines page for the 2027 Winter Session lists: the application opens in early October 2026 through EducationPlannerBC; November 15, 2026 for International Scholars Program applicants; January 15, 2027, 11:59 p.m. Pacific, the application deadline for everyone; January 31, 2027 for International Scholars documents; February 15, 2027 for English documents; March 15, 2027 for out-of-country grades; decisions from November 2026 to June 2027; and an acceptance deposit due on May 1 or June 1, 2027, whichever UBC assigns you. Confirm each on the page before you plan around it.

You upload documents to UBC’s Applicant Service Centre after applying. Have your school certify photocopies of the Class X certificate and the Class XI and XII marksheets with the principal’s signature and stamp; UBC says certified school copies are acceptable and notarised ones are not. When the board result is declared in May, the digitally signed marksheet appears in DigiLocker (CBSE publishes a DigiLocker access guide for its students); upload it the day it lands and keep the printed marksheet for the official copy. While you wait, the UBC application status messages guide decodes what the portal shows.

The Personal Profile is the part you control

Every high school applicant to Arts, Science, Engineering, Commerce and most other degrees completes the Personal Profile: short answers of 500 to 2,100 characters each, an activities list, and two referees. UBC publishes the questions and names four criteria: engagement and accomplishment, leadership, substance, and voice. The full set with worked answers is in the UBC Personal Profile question examples guide.

Indian applicants lose marks on this for a predictable reason. Board percentages are the whole conversation at school, so the profile gets written in the same register: coaching ranks, olympiad certificates, school topper. UBC has your marks already. A student who ran the logistics of a school fest or kept a family shop’s accounts for two years has a better profile than one who lists three certificates. The Personal Profile activities section guide shows how to enter those honestly. When a draft exists, paste each answer with its question into AcceptMe’s essay coach; it returns a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your own sentences, tagged works, tighten or fix, so you can see which lines read as a list.

If you apply to Commerce, Sauder adds program questions and a recorded video interview with thirty seconds to think and ninety to answer; the Sauder BCom video interview guide covers the format, and AcceptMe’s interview practice runs the same clock on camera.

Money: tuition, scholarships, proof of funds

UBC Vancouver’s international undergraduate tuition for 2026/27 for a full course load: Arts C$51,530; Science and Computer Science C$53,082; Engineering C$66,200; Commerce C$66,678. UBC caps increases for continuing students at 3 percent a year. Fees rise every May, so expect the 2027/28 numbers to be higher. UBC’s cost page has an estimator for housing, food and insurance rather than a single published figure; run it with a residence option selected.

Scholarships an Indian applicant can actually get, from UBC’s international scholarships page: the International Major Entrance Scholarship (C$10,000 to C$25,000 a year for 2026/27, renewable for up to three more years) and the Outstanding International Student Award (C$10,000 to C$25,000) are automatic; the Personal Profile is what separates candidates with the same marks. The International Scholars Program (the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award and its sibling awards, up to the full cost of the program for students with significant financial need) needs a school nomination, a separate application by November 15, 2026 and documents by January 31, 2027, with a video interview if shortlisted. Ask your principal in September; a school can nominate at most two students for Vancouver.

For the study permit, IRCC’s proof of financial support page requires, for applications on or after September 1, 2026, C$23,448 in living expenses for a single applicant outside Quebec, on top of first-year tuition and return airfare. IRCC wants six months of bank statements with the source of funds shown, so a lump sum that appears in a parent’s account the week before you apply is a refusal risk, not a solution.

The study permit

Canada caps new study permits. IRCC’s 2026 allocation notice set 408,000 permits for 2026, of which 180,000 need a Provincial Attestation Letter, and gave British Columbia 32,596 of those. UBC issues your PAL after you accept and pay the deposit; IRCC’s PAL page says it must be in the application and is valid only for the cap year it was issued in. IRCC has signalled further reductions for 2027.

The Student Direct Stream that once gave Indian applicants a fast, predictable route closed on November 8, 2024. Every application from India now goes through the standard process, and the numbers since then are the caveat every Indian family needs to hear. IRCC data reported by The PIE News put the approval rate for Indian applicants at 28 percent in January 2025 against 81 percent a year earlier, and ICEF Monitor reported 9,955 new permits issued to Indian students from January to August 2025, against 76,930 in the same months of 2024, with a 71 percent refusal rate. A UBC offer, a clean six-month funds trail and a study plan that matches your Class XII subjects is the file that gets through. Apply the week you accept the offer; processing from India is measured in months, not weeks.

A worked Personal Profile answer

Priya, CBSE (Science), Class XI aggregate 94, applying to Science. Question 4, one activity explained. About 1,600 characters.

Sample answer

The activity is the chemistry help group I ran for Class XI at my school in Pune for a year and a half. It started because four of us were failing the same unit tests and the teacher had 58 students. I booked the lab for Thursday lunch, wrote a one-page summary of each chapter the night before, and worked problems on the board while the others corrected me.

The part I did not expect was the drop-off. By November there were eleven students and I was doing everything. So I made each person own a chapter and teach it, and I stopped preparing the summaries myself. Two people left because they wanted to be taught, not to teach. The group got smaller and better. Average unit-test marks for the nine who stayed went from 61 to 78 over the second term, which the teacher confirmed from her register.

What I learned is that I like building the system more than I like being the one at the board, and that letting people go is part of running something. I still find the second part hard.

Note what it does not do: it never mentions her 94, never says “leadership,” and admits something. That is what UBC’s substance and voice criteria are looking for.

Mistakes Indian applicants make

  • Sending notarised copies. UBC says they are not acceptable. A photocopy certified by your principal is.
  • Assuming the school-medium exemption applies. The exemption is the 75 percent CBSE or ISC English clause, not twelve years of English-medium school. State-board students need a test.
  • Writing the profile as a marks summary. UBC already has the marks. Coaching ranks and topper claims score nothing under the four criteria.
  • Waiting for the board result to apply. The deadline is January 15, 2027. The May result confirms an offer; it cannot start one.
  • Choosing referees who cannot describe you. UBC may contact them. A class teacher who watched you run something beats a principal who knows your rank.

Where to go next

If you are also applying to Toronto, the U of T admission from India guide covers OUAC 105, the Standard Mathematics rule and the Rotman and Engineering video components. For Montreal, the McGill admission from India guide explains why McGill decides on your transcript alone and how the CAQ adds a step to the permit. The by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants lines up the same three schools for every major source country, and the summer Personal Profile plan gets the profile drafted in four weeks instead of the November scramble. When a draft exists, run every answer through AcceptMe’s essay coach and fix the sentences it flags before January 15.
