How to Get Into McGill From India: Transcript, IELTS, CAQ

Applying to McGill from India is the most transparent of the three big Canadian applications and the least forgiving: for almost every program the file is your Class X result, your Class XI and mid-year Class XII marks in numeric form, and an English test, because India is not on McGill’s exemption list. There is no essay and no interview. What you can still shape is which marks McGill sees, the scholarship application that does ask for more, and the two-step Quebec permit.

What McGill looks at from an Indian applicant

McGill has a page written for you: India Senior School Certificates. The review process in its own words: “Applicants will be considered for admission on Class X exams/results, school transcripts for Grades 11 and mid-year 12 or, if already written, on the final Class XII Certificate. Positional grades and/or predicted grades are not used. Grade 11 and 12 transcripts must show continuous assessment and examination results (overall term/semester results).”

Three consequences follow. McGill decides on Class X plus the school marks it has by March 1, and the May board certificate confirms the offer. The predicted-marks letter your school writes for UK applications does nothing here. And “numeric format” means marks out of 100, not grades or ranks. CBSE, CISCE and the state boards are all read the same way, on the marks.

The grades that get offers

McGill does not publish a percentage cut-off for Indian boards, and its India page’s “minimum grades” paragraph is generic; do not read a number into it. What McGill does publish is the prerequisite list, and a prerequisite at McGill means a subject you must have taken in both Class XI and Class XII with marks McGill can see:

McGill faculty or program Required in Class XI and XII
Arts No specific subject prerequisites
Science (life sciences and physical, math and computer science groups) Mathematics, and two of Biology, Chemistry or Physics
Engineering (all programs incl. Software and Computer) Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Biology cannot be used.
Management (Desautels BCom) Mathematics; the applied mathematics course is acceptable
Architecture Mathematics and Physics
Nursing Mathematics and two sciences, plus proof of French proficiency

Because McGill reads subject marks rather than an aggregate, the best-of-four or best-of-five percentage your school prints is not what a reader sees first. They see Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as three numbers in Class XI and again at mid-year XII. A 93 aggregate carried by English and Computer Science with an 81 in Physics is a weaker Engineering file than it looks. For Management, accepting applied mathematics is a real difference from U of T, which requires Standard Mathematics for Commerce; the U of T admission from India guide covers that rule.

English: India is not on the exemption list

McGill’s English proficiency page waives the test only for four consecutive years of school in a country McGill lists as English-primary (the UK, USA, Singapore, South Africa and so on), or for specific credentials such as IB English A at 5 or A-Level English at C. India is not on the list, and McGill says plainly that you still need proof “even if you consider English to be your first language, or have been attending a school at an accredited institution (in a non-English country) where English is the main language of instruction.” A CBSE English Core mark, however high, does not exempt you at McGill, unlike UBC. Book a test in the autumn. The minimums:

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, each component 6.0 or better; scores must be sent electronically by IELTS, paper reports are not accepted
  • TOEFL iBT on the new 6-point scale (tests from January 21, 2026): 4.5 overall for Arts, Science, Engineering and most programs, with reading, listening and writing 4.5 and speaking 4.0; 5.0 overall for Management
  • Duolingo English Test: 125, or 130 for the BCom
  • PTE Academic: 65 overall, each component 60 or better
  • CAEL: 70 overall, each component 60 or better
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced at grade B or C2 Proficiency at grade C

Results go from the testing body to McGill directly, by the supporting documents deadline; you cannot upload them. Sit the test once in the autumn and send it everywhere, and confirm the minimums on the page, since McGill notes they can change.

How and when to apply for Fall 2027

The deadlines on McGill’s India page: application for admission by January 15; supporting documents by March 1; Major Entrance Scholarship application and documents by January 21; Music application and documents by January 15; Social Work documents by March 7. The page prints the dates without a year, so read them as January 15, 2027 and March 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 entry, and confirm on the page before you plan around them; McGill’s deadlines for Fall 2027 lists them by where you finish school, kept current from McGill’s pages. You apply through McGill’s online application and then work in the McGill Applicant Portal; a second program choice for the same term is free after the first fee, and each further one costs C$140.16 according to McGill’s apply page.

What you upload, per the India page: a copy of the Class X board result and school results; school results for Class XI and mid-year Class XII “including continuous assessment, term, and examination results” in numeric form; and, once written, the final Class XII certificate in place of the school results. McGill warns that when a program is close to full, applicants who completed their file earlier may be preferred and incomplete files can be cancelled. Get the Class XI marksheet and the half-yearly Class XII marksheet uploaded in January, not March. When the board declares results in May, the digitally signed marksheet in DigiLocker (CBSE publishes a DigiLocker access guide for its students) is the fastest thing to upload to clear a condition.

Decisions come on a rolling basis from late winter into spring, conditional on the final Class XII certificate; McGill’s page says you are “expected to maintain your level of academic performance through to the completion of your pre-McGill studies,” so a board result well below the mid-year marks is a risk to the offer.

The honest part: the file is the transcript

For Arts, Science, Engineering, Management and most other programs, McGill’s India page lists the additional supporting documents that exist and then says: “If none of the above apply, additional supporting documents are not considered in the admission review process and should not be submitted.” No personal statement, no activities list, no interview. The programs that do ask for more: B.A. Population and Global Health (separate application), Education (language tests for some streams), Global Engineering (a personal statement, read jointly by both universities), Music (an audition through the Schulich School), Nursing (proof of French) and Religious Studies.

Written work still shows up in two places. The first is McGill’s own Major Entrance Scholarship application, which opens October 1 on the Applicant Portal, is due January 21, and is judged “on the basis of academic achievement and outstanding leadership in school or community activities,” with McGill adding that leadership “constitutes more than simple participation in extracurricular activities.” The India page lists it among the applications with additional supporting documents. Whatever it asks you to write about that leadership, paste it into AcceptMe’s essay coach first; the notes it pins to your sentences catch exactly the participation-described-as-leadership problem McGill names. The second place is every other school on your list, where the same student writes the UBC Personal Profile questions and records the Rotman Commerce supplemental video in the same winter; the UBC admission from India guide covers the first of those.

Money: tuition, scholarships, proof of funds

McGill Student Accounts publishes international undergraduate tuition for 2026-27 by degree, with a calculator on the page. From its 2026-27 international tables: BA tuition C$54,000 (about C$57,569 with fees and health insurance); BSc C$64,786 (about C$68,323); BEng C$65,168 (about C$69,197); BCom C$71,687 (about C$75,321). McGill guarantees the per-credit rate for the length of the program for 2026-27 entrants; the 2027-28 tables will differ, so check the page in the spring.

On scholarships, McGill’s entrance scholarships page says every applicant who meets the minimum academic requirements is automatically considered for a one-year C$3,000 award. Major Entrance Scholarships are C$3,000, C$5,000 or C$10,000 a year, renewable for up to four years, and need the separate application above; the C$12,000 tier is for Canadian citizens and permanent residents only. There is no India-specific award and no tuition exemption for Indian citizens of the kind Quebec grants to French and Belgian citizens.

Proof of funds for Quebec is set by the province, not by the federal figure. Quebec’s costs of studying page lists C$24,617 for one person as the basic-needs amount for applications from January 1, 2026, on top of tuition and the return flight. That is higher than the C$23,448 IRCC asks outside Quebec, and the same money is assessed once: Quebec’s CAQ page says applicants living in India present their proof of financial capacity to the Canadian visa office, which applies Quebec’s criteria before issuing the permit.

The study permit: CAQ first, then IRCC

Quebec adds a step. McGill’s CAQ guide calls the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec “a mandatory immigration document for all international students at McGill” and says to apply as soon as you are admitted, after paying the confirmation deposit that releases the acceptance letter. Quebec’s temporary selection for studies page gives the mechanics: apply on the Arrima platform, pay C$135 within an hour of submitting (the 2026 fee), upload documents within 15 days, and expect a decision within 25 business days in 80 percent of cases. The approved CAQ comes as an attestation letter, and that letter is your Provincial Attestation Letter for the federal application. Only then do you apply to IRCC for the study permit.

Quebec received 93,069 of the 180,000 PAL-required permits in IRCC’s 2026 allocation, the largest provincial share. The federal stage is where Indian applicants have been refused: since the Student Direct Stream closed on November 8, 2024, ICEF Monitor reported IRCC data showing 9,955 new permits to Indian students in January to August 2025 against 76,930 in the same period of 2024 and a 71 percent refusal rate. Start the CAQ the week you pay the deposit.

A worked reading of one transcript

Arjun, ISC, applying to Engineering

Arjun’s school prints a Class XI aggregate of 92.4 and a best-of-four. McGill will not read either. It will see, from the Class XI final and the Class XII half-yearly: Mathematics 96 and 94, Physics 84 and 87, Chemistry 90 and 91, English 95 and 93, Computer Science 97 and 96, plus his Class X ICSE result of 94.6. For Engineering the three numbers that matter are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and the Physics line is the one a reader pauses on. He cannot change it by March 1, but he can make sure the half-yearly sheet with the 87 is uploaded in January and that the transcript shows term and exam components. His IELTS is booked for October. The rest of his winter belongs to the UBC Personal Profile, because McGill has nothing else for him to write.

Mistakes Indian applicants make

  • Skipping the English test because school was English-medium. McGill says that is not an exemption. Book IELTS or TOEFL in the autumn.
  • Uploading a percentage certificate instead of subject marks. McGill wants numeric marks per subject with term and exam components. A one-line aggregate letter is not a transcript.
  • Waiting until March 1 to complete the file. McGill says earlier complete files may be preferred when programs fill. Upload in January.
  • Applying to Engineering from the CBSE Biology stream. Biology cannot substitute for Physics in McGill’s Engineering prerequisite.
  • Starting the CAQ late. Two sequential approvals sit between the offer and the flight. Pay the deposit and open the Arrima account the same week.

Where to go next

The UBC admission from India guide covers the 85 percent history, the CBSE English exemption and the Personal Profile that McGill never asks for, and the U of T admission from India guide explains OUAC 105 and the timed video answers for Rotman and Engineering. The by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants puts every major source country through the same three schools, and the scholarship essays and interviews guide shows how to write about leadership in the way scholarship committees, McGill’s included, say they read for. Then put the one thing McGill does ask you to write, the scholarship statement, through AcceptMe’s essay coach before January 21.
