HR Lehn Educational Consulting: Review and Alternative
HR Lehn Educational Consulting is Hilary Lehn, a solo independent educational consultant in White Rock and South Surrey who spent her earlier career inside admissions offices on both sides of the border and has been independent since 2013. If you are searching for her, you are probably a South Surrey family comparing a credentialed hourly consultant with something cheaper, or you have had the free consultation and want to know what the interview preparation involves. This is what she offers, what is public about her rate, what practice sessions with a person can and cannot do for a timed interview, and what a C$49-a-month tool adds.
What HR Lehn Educational Consulting is
Hilary Lehn is a one-person practice, and one of the few in BC with an admissions career behind the consulting. Her about page lists a Master’s in Counselling and three previous posts: Associate Director of Admission at a US liberal-arts college, Dean of Enrollment at a US boarding school, and Director of Admission and University Counselling at a Canadian independent day school. She is a Professional Member of the IECA, the independent consultants’ association with the strictest entry requirements, and a member of NACAC and International ACAC. The Globe and Mail profiled her in September 2019 as having gone independent in 2013.
Her services are the standard independent-consultant set, delivered one-to-one:
- Planning and advising: academic advising, career advising, list building, résumé and athletic profile, athletics recruiting.
- Applications: application essays, scholarships, and workshops.
- Interview preparation: practice sessions with guidance and feedback.
Two things stand out against the rest of the BC market. The blog is actually maintained, with posts as recent as September 2026 on researching Canadian universities and a June 2025 post on application essays for US programs and UBC Commerce. And the outcomes page names its clients: eleven testimonials with admits to UBC, SFU, UVic, McGill and Toronto, rather than an anonymous acceptance rate. The way in is a free 30-minute consultation.
What HR Lehn Educational Consulting costs
The rate is not on the site (checked 9 September 2026). The only public figure is dated: in its “Finding the right fit” feature of 27 September 2019, the Globe and Mail reported her rate as C$225 an hour. That is seven years old, so treat it as a floor rather than a quote; the current figure comes at the free consultation. Whatever it is now, the shape is hourly, one-to-one, with no packages advertised. The admissions consultant fees guide puts that reported rate beside every other published and reported consultant price in Canada.
AcceptMe, with unlimited timed on-camera interview practice plus the essay coach and the Story Bank, is C$49 a month, cancel any time, with a free tier that needs no card. At the 2019 rate, a whole application season on the coach costs less than a single hour.
What a practice session with a person can and cannot do
Interview preparation is a real line in her services, described as practice sessions with guidance and feedback, and that is more than most BC consultants offer. A former admissions director sitting across from you and telling you what landed is worth having. It is also, honestly, worth the hourly rate for the judgement: whether your story is the right story, whether the answer to “why this program” is convincing, what a US alumni interviewer is listening for.
What it cannot be is the exam. The formats a BC applicant actually faces are recorded and timed: the Sauder video gives you thirty seconds to think and ninety to answer with no retakes; the Ontario programs you reach through OUAC use Kira Talent with prep windows as short as ten seconds. A person in a session reacts to you. They nod, they soften a hard question, they prompt when you stall, and none of that happens on camera. And the arithmetic is unforgiving: an hour buys a handful of full-length attempts, and the skill is built over dozens. In the studies on our research page, an unguided practice run before a recorded interview changed nothing, tips videos changed nothing, and the one group that improved was the one that practiced with an automated interviewer and then read feedback on its own recording. The session tells you what to fix. The reps are where it gets fixed.

Where an admissions director still wins
Two things Hilary Lehn can do that AcceptMe cannot: read your tone and presence in the room, and give you judgement on programs, courses, athletics recruiting and how to apply, above all to the US, where she has sat on the other side of the desk. Her outcomes page naming real families and real admits, rather than a percentage, is the kind of honesty we wish more of the industry showed. What a consultant cannot sell is reps, and the skill a timed video tests is built by doing it many times with feedback each time. Where we would push back on any consultancy is essay help that ends up rewriting a student’s sentences: that is putting words in your mouth, and a paragraph in an adult’s voice is the easiest thing for a reader to spot. The founder’s account of why we built AcceptMe is the argument in full.
Who should hire HR Lehn Educational Consulting
- White Rock and South Surrey families who want a single credentialed person, in person, across the school list, the essays and the timeline, from Grade 10 or 11 onward.
- Students with a US list, or an athletics recruiting angle, where a former US admissions director’s judgement is the scarce thing.
- Anyone who wants to test the fit before paying: the 30-minute consultation is free, and the blog gives you a fair sample of how she thinks.
Who should use AcceptMe instead, or as well
- Students whose applications include a video interview, a timed written answer or a supplementary essay, at any school in any country, who know where they are applying and need to get good at the assessment itself.
- Families for whom an hourly rate in the low hundreds, times the hours a season needs, is out of reach. A month of the coach costs less than one of those hours.
- Clients of HR Lehn who want to arrive at each paid hour having already recorded and reviewed their answers, so the hour goes on judgement rather than on rehearsal.
If Sauder is on your list, start with the Sauder guide: the two written questions, the thirty-second-prep, ninety-second-answer video, and fifteen practice questions you can record tonight. If Ontario is, the guide to applying through OUAC 105 from BC covers the deadlines and supplementaries a BC counsellor may not mention. The video interview practice method explains why reviewing your own recording is the step that moves the score. The comparison of Canadian admissions coaching lines up every consultancy and tool we have reviewed. Rasul Learning Group and KEY Education are the Vancouver alternatives, and the consultants-by-city guide maps the whole Lower Mainland. And AcceptMe is where the reps happen, for free, before you book anyone’s hour.
