KVP Educational Consulting (Calgary) Review and Alternative

KVP Educational Consulting is the most credentialed independent educational consultant on the prairies: a Calgary practice run by a former IB school counselor with a master’s in educational psychology and membership in the two associations that matter. If you are searching for them, you are probably a Calgary family weighing a private consultant against something cheaper, or trying to find out what they charge, which the site does not say. This is what KVP offers, what is known about the price, and what hourly advice cannot do for the interview or the timed essay itself.

What KVP Educational Consulting is

KVP Educational Consulting is Kate Van Pernis, working alone from northwest Calgary. Her credentials are the strongest of any consultant we found between the Rockies and Ontario: an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology, a BA in History and Secondary Education, six-plus years as a school counselor at an IB World School, over twenty years working with students, and membership in both NACAC and HECA, the associations that hold independent consultants to a published code of ethics. The practice describes itself as nearly a decade old.

Her services read like a US college-counselling menu, which is the point: KVP is US-first, with Canadian university advising offered alongside.

  • Search and strategy: college search, college list, testing strategy, career counseling, academic planning.
  • Applications: application support, college essay creation and revision.
  • Interviews: “College Interview Coaching” is a line item on the services page, with no detail on format or what a session involves.

Delivery is remote over Zoom, in person in Calgary when time allows. The way in, set out on her common questions page and elsewhere, is a free 30- to 60-minute consultation, then an engagement letter, then a Custom College Plan account. She recommends starting in Grade 11 for US applications and says Grade 12 is fine if you are applying only in Canada. Two more things on the site deserve credit. She refuses to guarantee admission on the grounds that doing so violates professional ethics, which is the correct answer and one that several bigger companies in this space will not give you. And she is straightforward that the business is hers alone, with a list of over a hundred schools her students have been admitted to, from the Ivies, MIT and Stanford to McGill, U of T and UBC.

What KVP costs

The rate is not published (checked 4 September 2026). The structure of services page describes two ways to engage: a package, which she recommends and which includes email and text access between meetings, or hourly work bought in blocks of three or more hours paid up front. You learn the number on the free consultation.

The one price on any KVP property is a self-paced online course, “College Essay: Values & Purpose,” sold through Thinkific:

Product Price
College Essay: Values & Purpose Course (self-paced) $197
Consulting package (recommended) Not published
Hourly, in blocks of three or more hours Not published

For a sense of the market, the Calgary Herald reported in October 2022 that prairie consultants charged $150 to $250 an hour and that one or two meetings was typical for a family. We do not know where KVP sits in that range. A three-hour minimum block at those rates would come to somewhere between $450 and $750.

AcceptMe, with unlimited timed on-camera interview practice plus the essay coach and the Story Bank, is C$49 a month, and you cancel the month you submit. A whole application season costs about what one hour with a consultant at the top of the Herald’s range does.

What an hour with a consultant can and cannot do for an interview

Pay a consultant like Van Pernis for the things that need judgement. Whether to apply in the US at all, how to build a list that is not all reaches, what the Common App wants from a Calgary student, which tests to sit and when, whether your essay topic is a mistake. A former IB counselor with NACAC and HECA behind her is exactly who you want for those questions, and the fact that she will not promise you an outcome is a reason to trust her advice, not a reason to doubt it.

But an interview is not a judgement problem. It is a performance problem. Whether it is a timed video interview for a Canadian business school, an alumni interview for a US college, or a timed written answer inside a supplementary application, the skill being tested is whether you can produce a structured, specific answer under a clock on the first take. That skill is built the way any performance skill is built: by doing it, reviewing the recording, and doing it again. KVP’s interview coaching is a line item with no stated format, and whatever a session involves, a human across a Zoom call reacts to you. A person nods, softens a question, prompts you when you stall. A camera with a countdown does none of that, so a mock with a person is not a rehearsal of the exam you will sit.

The research is unusually clear on this. In the studies on our research page, an unguided practice run before a recorded video interview changed nothing, tips videos changed nothing, and the group that improved was the one that practiced with an automated interviewer and then read feedback on their own recording. A consultant can tell you what a good answer sounds like. Only reps make yours sound like that.

Where a counselor’s judgement beats a tool

A consultant who has sat on the school side of the desk can do two things AcceptMe cannot: read your tone and presence in the room, and give you judgement on programs, courses, testing and how to run a US application from Alberta. We are honest about both. What a consultant cannot sell is reps, and the skill a timed interview or a timed written answer tests is built by doing it many times with feedback each time. One caution that applies to the whole industry rather than to KVP in particular: the moment an essay service starts producing sentences for you, it is putting words in your mouth, and admissions readers are good at hearing it. The founder’s account of why we built AcceptMe is the argument in full.

Who should hire KVP

  • Calgary and Alberta families with a US application in mind, starting in Grade 11, who want one credentialed person across testing, the school list and the Common App.
  • Anyone whose main need is strategy rather than practice: which country, which schools, how to sequence a complicated application, and an honest read on the odds from someone who will not sell you a guarantee.
  • Students who want a career-counseling and academic-planning conversation before deciding what to apply to at all.

Who should use AcceptMe instead, or as well

  • Students whose applications include a video interview, a timed written answer or a supplementary essay, at any school in any country, who know where they are applying and need to get good at the assessment itself.
  • Families for whom a three-hour minimum at prairie rates is out of reach. A month of the coach costs about one consultant hour.
  • Clients of KVP, or any consultant, who want to arrive at each paid hour having already recorded and reviewed their answers, so the hour goes on judgement rather than on rehearsal.

If the interview is the part you are worried about, start with how to practice for a video interview, which sets out the rep-and-review loop the research supports, then build your answers with the STAR method examples. Our comparison of Canadian admissions coaching lines KVP up against the other options, and the consultant cost guide has every published and reported price in one place. Upperhand Counselling is the other Calgary practice, and the only one there that publishes an hourly rate; the consultants-by-city guide has the rest of Alberta and beyond. Then open AcceptMe and record your first answer tonight, for free.
