How to Get Into McGill From Bangladesh: HSC, A Levels, CAQ

McGill reads a Bangladeshi applicant almost entirely off the transcript: your SSC, your Class 11 marks and the HSC as it arrives, or your O-level and predicted A-level grades, against a published subject list per faculty. There is no essay and no interview for most programs. What you can still get wrong is the English proof, since the HSC does not waive it, the January 15, 2027 deadline for Fall 2027 entry, and the Quebec paperwork, because Montreal adds a CAQ before the study permit.

What McGill looks at from a Bangladeshi applicant

McGill has no Bangladesh page. The HSC falls under Other international high schools, where the table entry for Bangladesh reads “Intermediate/Higher Secondary School Certificate, First Division”. “First Division” is the pre-2001 marks language; on today’s GPA scale read it as the general rule on the same page: applicants need “a recognized, academic, pre-university diploma leading to university studies in their country”, with “the equivalent of a B+ average, though most programs require higher grades”, judged on “yearly averages and results in prerequisite subjects” from the last two years of school.

Two things follow. First, McGill decides in spring, before the HSC is written, so the file it reads is your SSC result, your Class 11 year-final and any pre-test marks your college has issued; the HSC is a condition on the offer. Second, “last two years” means Class 11 counts fully. A student who treats Class 11 as a warm-up for HSC coaching has already spent half the file.

If you are on Cambridge or Edexcel A levels, McGill reads you on its A-level requirements page instead: a minimum of three A levels in three different subjects (Maths and Further Maths count as one), or two A levels plus two AS levels, with all GCSE, IGCSE and O-level certificates submitted. McGill publishes grade bands here, which it does not do for the HSC.

The grades and subjects that get offers

Faculty HSC prerequisites (McGill’s wording) A-level grades McGill publishes
Science, Engineering, Arts & Science, Agriculture Math (minimum pre-calculus) and normally two of biology, chemistry or physics Science: predicted AAA or AAB, or final AAB. Engineering: from ABB (Mining, Materials) up to AAA or higher for Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical and Software
Management (Desautels BCom) Math (minimum pre-calculus) Predicted A*AA or AAAA, or final AAA
Arts No specific prerequisites Predicted AAA or AAB, or final AAB
Architecture Math (minimum pre-calculus) and physics See the A-level page

Sources: the two McGill pages linked above, checked September 2026. For an HSC student, “pre-calculus” is Higher Mathematics; the Business Studies group’s mathematics does not reach it, so a Commerce-group student is shut out of Desautels as well as Science. McGill does not publish an HSC GPA cut-off; the B+ equivalent is a floor, and McGill’s own line is that most programs require more.

English: the HSC does not waive it, O-level English does

McGill’s English proficiency page exempts applicants who spent at least four consecutive years at school in a country where English is the acknowledged primary language, which Bangladesh is not. HSC English does not appear on the exemption list. What does: an A-level English grade of C or better, or a GCSE, IGCSE or O-level English grade of B (or 5) or better. So an English-medium student in Dhaka with a B in O-level English Language is usually exempt at McGill; an HSC student never is.

Accepted tests and minimums: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0; TOEFL iBT 90 for most programs but 100 for Education and Management; Duolingo 125, or 130 for the BCom; CAEL 70 with no component below 60; PTE Academic 65 with no component below 60; Cambridge C1 Advanced grade B or C2 Proficiency grade C. Scores go electronically from the testing body and must land by McGill’s document deadlines. If Desautels is on your list, the higher TOEFL and Duolingo bars apply.

How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry

You apply through the McGill application and track it on the Applicant Portal; the fee is $140.16 per application. McGill’s important dates entry puts the Fall 2027 deadline for applicants from an overseas high school at January 15, 2027, for Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Arts, Arts and Science, Education, Engineering, Management, Nursing and Science. Upload your SSC transcript, the college’s Class 11 marksheet and, for A-level students, predicted grades and every O-level certificate, as soon as the portal lists them; McGill warns that incomplete applications may be cancelled after the document deadline shown in your portal. For the September 2026 cycle McGill’s decision dates page listed decisions for overseas high school applicants from mid-November to mid-May; expect the same shape for 2027 and confirm on the page.

The file is the transcript, so where does writing appear?

Be clear about this: for Arts, Science, Engineering, Management and most other McGill programs, nothing you write is read. There is no personal statement and McGill does not interview. Writing enters in three places. First, the Major Entrance Scholarship application, due January 21 for applicants from outside Canada, which asks for a general essay on a figure who inspired you or an experience that gave you a new outlook, a one-page reference letter you write for yourself in the third person, a three-year activities list and two reference letters; finalists may be interviewed. Second, programs with their own process, such as Music (audition) and Architecture (portfolio). Third, and largest, the other Canadian applications the same student is almost always filing: the UBC Personal Profile and the U of T Rotman and Engineering timed videos. That is where AcceptMe earns its place in a McGill applicant’s January: paste the scholarship essay or a UBC answer into the essay coach for a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, tagged works, tighten or fix, and run the U of T videos in the timed interview until the ninety-second clock stops feeling short.

Money

Degree, admitted 2026-27 International tuition per year Estimated total with fees and insurance
Bachelor of Arts$54,000.00$57,569.02
Bachelor of Science$64,785.90$68,322.91
Bachelor of Engineering$65,167.50$69,196.93
Bachelor of Commerce$71,687.40$75,321.21

Figures are from McGill’s 2026-27 international undergraduate tuition and fees table, which says tuition is guaranteed for the length of the program for students admitted in 2026-27; the 2027-28 table will be higher and is published on McGill Student Accounts when set. Living costs come on top: Quebec’s cost of studies page sets the living amount a CAQ applicant must show at $24,617 a year for one person as of January 1, 2026, and the federal side of the permit uses Quebec’s figure rather than IRCC’s $23,448.

Scholarships: every first-time applicant is automatically considered for a $3,000 one-year entrance scholarship on grades alone, per McGill’s entrance scholarships page. Major Entrance Scholarships of $3,000, $5,000 or $10,000 are renewable and open to international students; the $12,000 tier is for Canadians only. McGill does not run a full-cost award for international undergraduates; budget as if you will pay the table.

The CAQ, then the study permit

Quebec is the one province where two governments approve you. McGill’s CAQ application guide says to apply for the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec “as soon as you have been admitted”; undergraduates must pay the confirmation deposit first to unlock the official letter, and Immigration Québec’s standard processing is 25 business days after it confirms your documents arrived. Only then can you file the federal study permit. For Quebec the CAQ carries the attestation that replaces the Provincial Attestation Letter other provinces issue, as IRCC explains on its PAL page. Under the 2026 cap Quebec holds 93,069 application spaces. Deposit in May, CAQ in May, permit in June: that is the calendar that gets you to Montreal in August.

Bangladesh was never on the Student Direct Stream, so its November 2024 closure changed nothing; you were always in the regular queue, and in the first half of 2025 ICEF’s reading of IRCC data put approvals for new study permits near 30%. Six months of statements, a sponsor letter, the McGill fee estimate and no unexplained deposits. For the money itself, open a student file at your bank; since August 2026 Bangladesh Bank also permits tuition payment by designated card, as The Daily Star reported.

Reading your transcript against McGill’s table

Nusrat, A levels, Dhaka, applying to Engineering and Science

Nusrat has O levels with A* in Mathematics and Physics, A in Chemistry and B in English Language, and predicted A levels of A* Mathematics, A Physics, A Chemistry. Against McGill’s table: three A levels in three different subjects, yes; Science asks predicted AAA or AAB, met; Chemical or Electrical Engineering asks AAA or higher, met on prediction but confirmed only by the June results. Her B in O-level English satisfies McGill’s exemption, so she skips IELTS for McGill, but she still writes it for UBC, which does not list O-level English. She applies January 15, uploads predicted grades from her school the same week, and files the Major Entrance Scholarship essay by January 21.

Rafi, HSC Science group, Chattogram Board

Rafi has SSC GPA 5.00, a Class 11 year-final of 86% with Higher Mathematics 91, Physics 88, Chemistry 84, and will write the HSC in 2027. McGill sees the SSC and the Class 11 marksheet; the prerequisite line for Science (math plus two sciences) is met. The “B+ equivalent” floor is cleared, but McGill says most programs want more, and his Chemistry is the soft spot. He takes IELTS in October, because the HSC English paper is not an exemption, and any offer will be conditional on the HSC result.

Mistakes applicants from Bangladesh make

  • Waiting for the HSC to apply. The deadline is January 15, 2027, months before the exam. McGill reads Class 11 and the SSC.
  • Assuming HSC English counts. Only A-level or O-level English appears on McGill’s exemption list. An HSC student needs a test.
  • Missing the Desautels test bar. TOEFL 100 and Duolingo 130 for Management, not 90 and 125.
  • Applying to Science from the Business Studies group. McGill wants math at pre-calculus and two sciences.
  • Filing the CAQ late. It comes after the deposit and before the permit, and Quebec quotes 25 business days once your documents are in.

Where to go next

The same transcript goes west and east: the UBC admission guide for Bangladeshi applicants covers the HSC subject lines, UBC’s past-years 74% figure and the Personal Profile, and the U of T admission guide for Bangladeshi applicants explains OUAC 105, the Rotman timed video and the Engineering profile. For other countries’ credentials at all three schools, the by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants is the index. If the McGill scholarship essay is the only thing you will write for Montreal, the scholarship essays and interviews guide shows what a selection committee reads for. Then run that essay, and every UBC and U of T answer, through AcceptMe before the January deadlines.
