How to Get Into UBC From Bangladesh: HSC, IELTS, Profile
If you are finishing the HSC in Bangladesh and want UBC, three things decide the file: the marks UBC can actually see in spring (your SSC, your Class 11 year-final and whatever pre-test marks your college has issued, with the HSC itself arriving later as a condition), an English test score, because the HSC does not waive UBC’s English standard, and the Personal Profile, which every applicant writes. The deadline for Fall 2027 entry is January 15, 2027. Students on Cambridge or Edexcel A levels at an English-medium school are read on a different page, and this guide covers both.
What UBC looks at from a Bangladeshi applicant
UBC’s requirements are published per country. Select Bangladesh on UBC’s international high schools page and the general requirement reads: “Graduation from a university-preparatory program at a senior secondary school: Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)/Intermediate Certificate (IC). Certificates must be official. Photocopies are acceptable if certified by school principal, head, or counsellor. Notarized copies are not acceptable.” A notary stamp is exactly what UBC will not take; your principal’s signature on a photocopy is what it wants.
On grades, the same page says: “The grades you’ll need to be considered for an offer of admission from UBC differ by degree, and vary from year to year. In past years, an average of 74% on Bangladesh’s grading scale was required.” That is the only number UBC publishes for the HSC, and it is a past-years floor, not a promise for 2027; the competitive degrees sit above it.
UBC makes most decisions between February and May. By then a Bangladeshi applicant has an SSC result, a Class 11 year-final from the college, and perhaps a pre-test or test exam mark. The HSC itself comes after the decision, so any offer is conditional on it. The marks that get you the offer are the ones your college has already issued.
If you are on A levels at an English-medium school, UBC reads you on its British-patterned page instead: standing in at least six academic subject areas across GCSE, AS and A level, including English, with at least three A levels or six AS levels, a minimum C in English Language or Literature at GCSE, AS or A level, and a past-years bar of “a B average (a combination of mainly A and B grades)”. Predicted grades carry the spring decision; the June series result confirms it.
The subjects each faculty needs
| UBC Vancouver degree | HSC applicant (UBC’s minimum) | A-level applicant |
|---|---|---|
| Applied Science (Engineering) | Math, Chemistry and Physics at Higher Secondary | Math at A level, plus Chemistry or Physics at A level |
| Science | Math, Chemistry and Physics at Higher Secondary; Physics may be waived with A grades in Math and Chemistry | Math at A or AS level, Chemistry at GCSE at minimum |
| Commerce (Sauder) | Math at Higher Secondary | Mathematics at A or AS level |
| Arts | Nothing beyond general admission | Nothing beyond general admission |
Source: the degree-specific blocks on the same UBC page, checked September 2026. For the HSC, “Math” means Higher Mathematics; a Business Studies student without it cannot meet the Sauder or Science line.
English: the HSC does not waive it
UBC’s English Language Admission Standard lists the ways to meet it. None of them is “an HSC English paper”. The routes a Bangladeshi applicant can realistically use:
- A test. IELTS Academic 6.5, no band below 6.0; TOEFL iBT 90 (Reading 22, Listening 22, Writing 21, Speaking 21); Duolingo 125 (Reading and Listening 115, Writing and Speaking 120); CAEL 70; PTE Academic 65, no part below 60; Cambridge 180.
- A-level English. A final grade of A or B in A Level English Language or English Literature (non-ESL). An O-level English grade does not appear on UBC’s list, so most A-level students in Bangladesh still write IELTS.
- Four years at an eligible international secondary school that teaches in English in a country where English is not the primary language, immediately before UBC. UBC decides which schools qualify; do not assume yours does.
Scores are due by February 15, 2027, and UBC only accepts recent tests (for 2026/27 entry, tests taken from January 1, 2024 onward), so a Class 10 IELTS may be expired. Book for autumn 2026 so a retake is possible.
How and when to apply for Fall 2027 entry
The application is the UBC form on EducationPlannerBC. From UBC’s dates and deadlines page for the 2027 Winter Session: the application opens in early October 2026; the December 1, 2026 date is a scholarship deadline for Canadian citizens and permanent residents only; the final deadline for everyone is January 15, 2027; high school applicants from outside Canada must submit documents by March 15, 2027; the English standard must be met by February 15, 2027; decisions go out from November 2026 through June 2027; most students must accept and pay the deposit by May 1 or June 1, 2027. Confirm each date on the page before you plan around it.
Once submitted, the application cannot be edited; the UBC early versus regular admission guide explains why a November submission buys an international applicant nothing and freezes the profile six weeks early.
The Personal Profile: the part you control
Every direct-entry applicant to Arts, Science, Applied Science and Commerce writes it. UBC’s Personal Profile page publishes the questions: who you are and how family, friends or community would describe you; what is important to you and why; up to five activities; one or two of those in depth; optional additional information on your academic history; and two references, one a school official. Answers are 500 to 2,100 characters, scored for engagement and accomplishment, leadership, substance, and voice. The UBC Personal Profile question examples walk through each one with a worked answer.
Bangladeshi profiles fail in a predictable way: they list the olympiad medal, the debate trophy and the coaching-centre rank, and never say what the writer decided. Write the draft yourself, then paste each answer into AcceptMe’s essay coach; it returns a verdict paragraph and notes pinned to your sentences, tagged works, tighten or fix, and it flags the paragraph that reads like a CV. It never writes for you, which matters on a profile UBC checks for generated text. Sauder applicants answer extra questions and may be invited to a recorded video interview; the Sauder BCom Personal Profile and video interview guide covers that step.
Money
| Degree | International tuition per credit | 30-credit year |
|---|---|---|
| Arts | $1,717.68 | about $51,530 |
| Science | $1,769.40 | about $53,082 |
| Applied Science | $1,789.18 | about $53,675 |
| Commerce | $2,222.61 | about $66,678 |
Those are the 2026/27 rates in the UBC Vancouver Academic Calendar for students starting in 2026/27, capped at 3% annual increases for four years; 2027/28 rates will be higher. Add housing, food, books and fees. For the study permit, IRCC requires a single applicant outside Quebec to show $23,448 for living costs for applications on or after September 1, 2026, plus first-year tuition and travel.
Scholarships an applicant from Bangladesh can actually get, from UBC’s international awards page: the International Major Entrance Scholarship and the Outstanding International Student Award, both $10,000 to $25,000, both considered automatically when you are offered admission, so the Personal Profile is the application. Then the International Scholars Program (the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award and its siblings), which is need-and-merit: your school nominates up to two students, the award application is due November 15, 2026, documents by January 31, 2027, with four short essays and a video interview between January and March 2027. If you need real financial help to attend, ask your principal about it in September.
The study permit
After you accept and pay the deposit, UBC issues your Provincial Attestation Letter; IRCC says to get the PAL from your school and file it with the permit application, not after. Under the 2026 cap British Columbia holds 32,596 application spaces, and the 2027 allocation is expected on a similar footing. Apply the week you accept. Bangladesh was never on the Student Direct Stream list, so its closure in November 2024 changed nothing for you; the regular queue was slow in 2025, when ICEF’s reading of IRCC data put the first-half approval rate for new study permits near 30%, against 51% a year earlier; IRCC publishes no Bangladesh-specific rate.
A Bangladeshi file needs six months of bank statements with no sudden deposits, a sponsor letter naming the relationship and the sponsor’s income, and UBC’s fee estimate. To pay the deposit and tuition, ask your bank to open a student file; since August 2026 Bangladesh Bank also lets students pay foreign tuition with a designated bank card, reported by The Daily Star. Neither UBC nor IRCC asks for Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation of your certificates, but your bank may; it is done online through MyGov, as UNB describes.
A worked Personal Profile answer
Tanvir, Dhaka Board, SSC GPA 5.00, Science group, Class 11 year-final 88%, applying to Applied Science. Question 4, about 1,700 characters.
The activity I want to explain is not the physics olympiad, it is the tutoring I did for four Class 8 boys in my building during the 2024 floods, when their school shut for three weeks. Their mothers asked because I was the oldest student in the building. I said yes because I thought it would be easy.
It was not. Two of them had never understood fractions, and I had never noticed that I did not know how to explain them. I stopped after the first week and rewrote everything as problems about splitting rickshaw fares, which is the arithmetic they already did every day. I also decided to teach them separately from the two stronger boys, which their mothers did not like, because it looked like I was calling their sons slow. I explained why and did it anyway.
When school reopened, all four passed the half-yearly maths paper; the two who had struggled scored 61 and 58, up from failing. What I learned is that being good at a subject is a different skill from teaching it, and that I had been coasting on the first one. I still tutor the younger two on Fridays.
Note what UBC can score: a decision that upset people and was taken anyway, a number, and a reflection that costs the writer something.
Mistakes applicants from Bangladesh make
- Sending notarized copies. UBC says notarized copies are not acceptable. Get the principal to sign photocopies of the SSC certificate and transcript and the college’s Class 11 marksheet.
- Assuming the HSC English paper is proof of English. It is not on UBC’s list. Book IELTS or another accepted test for autumn 2026.
- Treating 74% as the target. It is a past-years floor for the least competitive degrees. Engineering, Science and Sauder offers to HSC students sit in the A+ band.
- Missing Physics for Science. UBC lists Math, Chemistry and Physics; a waiver exists only with A grades in the other two.
- A profile written by a coaching centre. UBC scores voice and checks for copied and generated text.
- Leaving the permit until August. File the PAL and the permit application the week the deposit clears.
Where to go next
The same HSC or A-level file can go to Montreal and Toronto in the same week: the McGill admission guide for Bangladeshi applicants explains why McGill decides almost entirely on grades and what the CAQ adds to the permit process, and the U of T admission guide for Bangladeshi applicants covers OUAC 105 and the Rotman and Engineering timed videos. For every other country’s credential, deadline and English rule at the three schools, use the by-country guide to Canadian university admissions for international applicants. The UBC activities section guide shows how to fill the five-activity grid when your list is olympiads and coaching. When the profile draft exists, run each answer through AcceptMe’s essay coach before January 15.
