VerveSmith Review (Toronto): the $5,500 Fee and an Alternative
VerveSmith is the Toronto practice of Teo Salgado, who spent more than twenty years inside admissions and recruitment at the University of Toronto and Western before setting up as an independent educational consultant. If you are searching for them, you are probably a family weighing a credentialed human against something cheaper, and wondering what the fee is, because the website does not say. This is what VerveSmith does, what the public record says it costs, where a former admissions officer’s judgement is worth every dollar, and the one thing no consultant can sell.
What VerveSmith is
VerveSmith was founded around 2014 and works from Suite 500, 439 University Avenue in Toronto. Teo Salgado holds an HBA from U of T, an MA from McGill and a UCLA certificate in college admissions counselling, is a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association and sits on the board of the Higher Education Consultants Association. The credential that matters most is the twenty-plus years reading files and recruiting for U of T and Western: he has been the person on the other side of the application. The Globe and Mail profiled him in a 2019 piece, “Finding the right fit,” and quoted him again in May 2026. He also writes a blog, Clean Slate.
The services are those of a classic independent educational consultant:
- Counselling for Grades 9 and 10, and for Grades 11 and 12: course choices, building the profile, the long game.
- University applications: list-building, essay brainstorming and review, and, in the site’s words, interview improvement tips and mock interviews.
- Boarding school, graduate school, transfers and gap years.
- A group University Applications Writing Workshop: three two-hour virtual sessions on 6 October, 20 October and 3 November 2026.
Delivery is one-to-one, and the counselling window runs from March of Grade 11 to October of Grade 12. The site carries more than twenty testimonials, many from international families. Two things are absent, and both to VerveSmith’s credit: there is no claimed admission rate and no guarantee. Kira Talent, the platform behind most Canadian undergraduate video interviews, is not named.
What VerveSmith costs
The rate is not on the website (checked 5 September 2026), and the workshop page does not show a price either. You get the number by enquiring. The one public figure comes from the Globe and Mail’s May 2026 piece on parents paying consultants, which reported that VerveSmith offers “hourly sessions or a flat rate of $5,500.” The hourly rate itself was not reported.
AcceptMe, with unlimited timed on-camera interview practice plus the essay coach and the Story Bank, is C$49 a month, and you cancel the month you submit. A whole application season comes to a small fraction of the flat rate, and a fraction of the workshop too, if the workshop turns out to cost what three two-hour sessions with a consultant usually do.
What twenty years in admissions can and cannot do for the interview
Judgement is the product here, and it is a good product. Someone who read files at two large Ontario universities knows what an admissions reader actually does with an essay, which claims land and which get skimmed, and how a Grade 11 course choice looks from the inside. That is what you are buying with the flat rate, and nobody selling software can honestly say they replace it.
The interview is different. VerveSmith lists mock interviews and interview improvement tips inside the package, and for a scholarship panel or a school that interviews in person, a mock with a former admissions officer is the right rehearsal. But the interview most Grade 12s now face at Ivey, Rotman, Schulich, Queen’s Commerce or Sauder is a camera, an unseen question, a short prep window and a hard answer clock. A person conducting a mock nods, softens a question you misheard and prompts you when you stall; the camera does none of that, so the rehearsal is not the exam. And a package that is mostly counselling hours cannot be mostly reps.
The research on our research page is blunt about the tips half as well: an unguided practice run before a recorded video interview changed nothing, tips videos changed nothing, and the group that improved was the one that practiced with an automated interviewer and then read feedback on its own recording. A consultant can tell you what a good answer sounds like. Only reps make yours sound like that.

Where a former admissions officer still wins
A consultant who spent two decades on the inside can do two things AcceptMe cannot: read your tone and presence in the room, and give you judgement on programs, courses, how to apply and whether a US or UK route is worth it. We are honest about both, and VerveSmith is the kind of practice, credentialed and guarantee-free, that we would point a family to when the question is strategy. What a consultant cannot sell is reps, and the skill a timed video interview tests is built by doing it many times with feedback each time. On essays, review that tells you what a reader will think is exactly what a former reader is for; the thing to avoid anywhere is a service that rewrites your sentences, because that is putting words in your mouth. AcceptMe comments and never rewrites. The founder’s account of why we built AcceptMe is the argument in full.
Who should hire VerveSmith
- Families in Toronto who want one accountable adviser from Grade 9 or 10 onward, across course selection, the school list and the essays, and who value that the adviser has read applications for a living.
- Anyone whose main need is strategy rather than practice: which programs, which country, boarding school, a transfer or a gap year.
- International families applying into Canada who want someone who knows how Canadian admissions offices read a file from abroad.
Who should use AcceptMe instead, or as well
- Students whose applications include a video interview, a timed written answer or a supplementary essay, at any school in any country, who already know where they are applying and need to get good at the assessment itself.
- Families for whom a four-figure flat rate is out of reach. A season of the coach costs less than the workshop is likely to.
- Clients of VerveSmith, or any consultant, who want to arrive at each paid hour having already recorded and reviewed their answers, so the hour goes on judgement rather than on rehearsal.
If you are in Toronto, start with the Rotman Commerce guide or the Schulich BBA guide, each with practice questions you can record tonight, then read how to practice for a video interview for the routine. The Canadian admissions coaching comparison puts VerveSmith next to the other firms, and the consultant cost guide collects every published and reported price. Admissions Avenue is the closest Toronto comparison, another practice with unpublished prices, and the consultants-by-city guide maps the rest. Then record an answer, read the coach’s notes, and decide what the consultant’s hour should go on.
